talk to me about transmission options

I have been through lots of threads and reference sites but I have not found any good transmission info.

were there only 2 tranny's offered for the 3rd gen (auto and standard)? What models were they? how tough were they? do either one have any issues (towing, wheeling ect...)?

Up to 99, they offered 4 spd auto and 5 spd manual. After, the 3rd gens only came in an auto. The only chronic problems I have heard of have been overdrive planetary gear failure in some of the newer models (2001-2002 i think).
