How Brillo seals off a brake line while waiting for parts.

Want to save from bleeding out your entire brake system? This is how I do it..;) Hope this can help someone. I save the old ends off brake lines. Then weld the line shut about 1/4 inch from the nut. Use a coupler when at a caliper or wheel cylinder. This way my brake reservoir stays full and I only have to bleed out where I am working.

If at a junction. Just screw the nut into the junction block.


Note: Just to be clear. The vehicle is not drivable like this. It's only to save fluid and keep your reservoir full only!!

They sell little silicon caps/plugs on Amazon/orielly/autozone etc that work perfect for that.

I usually seal off all but one of my brakes using this method to save rotor wear, vehicle stops fine with only one brake, all four are unnecessary. If I’m ever in a situation where one brake isn’t enough I can put my leg through the holes in the floor pan and slow down that way

Good to know about silicone caps.

I just like to recycle and use what I going to throw away. as those couples came from PO splicing lines. I done this for years.

Yea they are reusable, they’ve held up pretty darn good so far. I’ve used them a few times already (tundra brakes, 2x rear 3rd swaps, stainless brake lines). I think timmy the toolman uses them too.

Great to know. As brake fluid is harsh on things. I used mine for years and even had lines sealed off for months and years while working on frames and bodys on Toyotas.

Being in the rust belt. I do all you can to keep from bleeding the entire system as that can go very badly. Nothings worse then snapped off blenders :O

Thanks for the info on the silicon caps.

Another option is a tool that puts a vacuum on your master cylinder. That way no brake fluid is lost. I just dont see many DIY fellows having that tool.

I take a length of 2x4 and put it between the front of the seat and the brake pedal to where it presses the brake pedal a couple inches. It will apply a small amount of pressure to the brake lines, but more importantly it keeps the brake lines from continuing to gravity bleed brake fluid through the lines because you have closed the return/pressure relief valves in the master cylinder. I typically only do this for short term repairs, but it will work for long term. Some vehicles you will need to unplug the brake pedal switch so your brake lights don't drain the battery down. I had vacuum caps laying around at the time. Used them, worked great in keeping the brake fluid in the lines.
Good suggestion on rubber caps and using a 2x4 preventing gravity bleed.

You guys and your line condoms... Great ideas though.. I prefer the sealed off line like I suggested. My method cant fall off or leak if something goes wrong.

The slight brake pressure by 2X4 is a good idea as well. I just had those move get bumped and slide out in time.

They also make an adjustable pole in place of a 2X4

You have to realize, Sometimes Its a long time before repair as my fleet of 5 only has 1 or 2 on the road at a time. So I always look for the long term solution to any issue.

Whatever you do, don't use the latex or nitrile gloves to try to seal off a gas line or brake line as they will not work. I learned that the hard way. Years ago.

Nothing wrong with that. I just had to tease. All methods work and that what matters.

The circumstances and length of time of not connected will give folks some ideas as to not have to bleed an entire system. Lots a good ideas and thats what this post was about.

I did like the slight pressure on the brake pedal but better disconnect the battery as your brake lights will be on the entire time that pole or 2×4 . So in a few days. Your battery would be dead. ;)
