Crazy times to buy a vehicle

Off subject a little, as this pertains to my recent Tundra purchase. I had a 2019 Tundra Platinum. While in for service last month the sales manager offered to buy it from me. He offered $1000 less than I paid for it ($45,000). The dealer had no new or used Tundras on their lot. I thought the offer was fair but with no inventory to replace it with I declined. When I bought it I paid $46,000 on a $53,500 MSRP. There was a huge discount at the time because it was 2020 and mine was a leftover 2019 that never sold. After entertaining his offer, I found out thru KBB, NADA and other sites that my truck booked anywhere between $52,000 to $56,000! I looked high and low for another Platinum and eventually found one, the only new Tundra on that (a different) dealer’s lot. It's MSRP was $57,056. They gave me $52,000 for mine…so I traded up 2 years for $5256 and when you take into consideration that I now have a truck with a lot more options (over $3000 more) I actually traded for $2200. I felt fortunate to only pay MSRP for the new Tundra as they had a 4Runner TRD Pro for $61,000, a $9000 “dealer adjusted price!” Wow! Btw, I am loving my garage right now.

61k for a 4Runner? More than a little crazy I think, and this inflation is all transitory right? Right.

Given we've had very, very little inflation for nearly 40 years, I think much, not all, but much of current inflation is here to stay and grow.

I've already seen many restaurants either increasing prices or decreasing portions, which isn't a bad idea for American waistlines, haha.

No component goods are getting cheaper, wages increasing and supply decreasing, its is a trifecta for inflation.

Time to ask for a raise!!!

My girlfriend drives a 2019 Chevrolet Cruze that is now worth $2000 more than what we paid for it in 2019.

Hold on to your hard earned cash. Cost inflation usually preceeds a recession specially if there is a lag in nominal wage growth.

Thanks…I didnt know there is an off topic board. I really must have had a brain fart as I meant to post this thread on the Gen 4 forum…since I own an ‘07. But while I am here I confess that my ‘02 Limited was my favorite 4Runner.

That's the trick of it though, the buying power of that cash is going down. Fast. I don't see it necessarily as the 4runner being more expensive as the dollar just buys less 4runner than it used too. Savers are going to get crushed if the inflation continues...

You' are right about savers loosing purchasing power. Getting an interest bearing account like a savings or a money market account could help, although the interest rates are low. During a financial recession when earnings take a hit is when savings help.

Its a great time to sell a used car... I wanted to sell my 4Runner and get a GX, but i'm still annoyed of having to pay almost 10% tax on the new vehicle which is starts to really kill the deal.

Trucks have done an amazing job of retaining and or increasing in value right now.
