well,, 200 miles and several days and the light is back. so prob a pluged converter. someone said pack the adapter I put in with steel wool. might try that , otherwise guess live with it. not going to by a cat where inspections are not required. runs good, gets 16+mpg this time of year

p0420 code again
Do you need to add antifreeze to your overflow tank on occasion?
Do you have any exhaust leak?

this is on my 2001
hard to say on both....it has an exhaust leak but its after the muffler.
not adding antifreeze very much. maybe a few sips in 500 miles, but ive had a freeze plug block heater that was seeping ( fixed the other day). I hope its not a headgasket issue. The light has been on ever sice I have owned it, and the lady I bought it from said it had been on for a while., Does not overheat, passed a leak down and the dye test on radiator that checks for exhaust gas in cooling.

Had the same issue. Owner before me had the same thig replaced the O2 sensors. I did it about a year later and it just seemed to be a temporary fix of 3-4 months. After consulting with a local 4Runner mechanic and the internet I finally opted to replace the cat convertor. Since doing that over 2 years ago I've had no issues with the code at all.
Forgot to say - the mechanic was able to pin point it being the cat convertor and not a sensor based on testing it. He would measure before and after the cat to see what levels were at. Since they were the same before and after he could deem the cat done for.

I had this issue as well recently but it went away after a week of being on. It was the o2 sensor code after the cats.

Just for the hell of it can you patch the exhaust leak (even though it's beyond the muffler) with some type of metal wrap?

Being it's on the 01 and those have 2 cats with 4 sensors wide band. Those will detect a high airflow burned out cat error.
My 02 Camry had that error and it was the front cat burn through.
So being it disables the VSC and Trac with the CEL on. What happens when you put a spacer with 2 gaskets on the 2nd O2 sensor after the first cat?

01 and 02 have 4 oxygen sensors? I thought they only had 2 of them total similar to the Cali emissions 4Runners from earlier years.

Mine really never goes away, went away after changing the rear O2 sensor a few weeks ago, just to come back. I gave up.
