What is this?

This will probably be easy for most of you but I can't find this part and don't know the name. It is some sort of shield/guard made out of rubber/plastic. It's on the undercarriage of a 99 4runner right under the driver's seat. What is it called and is it necessary? The vehicle is not driven off road.

When I was changing my shifter bushings, I broke the bolts that hold it on and never bothered to put it on.... Someone here told me that some early year 4Runner's didn't come with one.

As for the part name, not sure but good luck finding it

All mine have that removed. It's a shield for your gas filter area. I haven't seen on
Intact. ;)

Protects the fuel filter from rocks and debris. My 2000 has a cracked one.

Fuel filter cover. For some reason, only the northern 4runners seem to come with it from the factory. Only way I see those down here is, if someone migrated from the north.
All the ones I see in the recycle yards are broken. Probably from moving the cars around with forklifts using those huge forks on it.

I have collected 3x of them in mint condition, in fact I consider myself an expert in this one part.

COVER, TRANSMISSION UNDER 5149535010 I love them.

If your in the rust belt they are key to keeping the fuel filter from becoming a barnacle encrusted nightmare. some may laugh at this entire theory but to me this one part makes life worth living.

Makes sense. None of mine but one had them. Gone years ago. The antiseize and anti rust inhibitors are supposed to prevent that...;)

Those will crack and damage when you take it to a shop and they put it on a lift. I found a cracked cover but glued it back together with some metal wire stitches. It really protects the fuel lines and filter area.

I found a nice minty one in a junkyard. All excited I went to install it only to find my 96 does not have the spots in the frame to attach it.

My ‘02 has it, and it was an original Sacramento vehicle from new, so not too sure about it only being on northern cars?

I found myself having to remove it every time I wanted to lift the vehicle and place on jackstands, so I eventually just left it off. It’s now stored away in the garage, but may re-install once I feel I won’t be working under the truck for a while.

There is a specific spot on the shield for using jack without removing.it
