Nice find! I really like the two tone.

Important sentiments have already been shared but I tell everyone who buys a third gen 4runner to just replace the LBJs. I am one of those people who knew it should be done but put it off. Luckily it wasn't catastrophic for me but it could have been.

I also wanted a third gen 4runner since my dad brought one home when I was in junior high. Took me 20 years to get it. Lol.

The steering wheel is actually crunchy at the top!! I'm in the process of trying to refinish it well as I can without re-wrapping it. Saddle soap, a brush, and then a leather belt to burnish it. Hopefully it turns out ok.

There are dozens and dozens of example of LBJ's failing on these truck with zero signs they had any issues. The rule of thumb is to replace every 100k miles to be on the safe side and again, OEM part only.

The radiators can also fail (internally) and cause coolant and transmission fluid to mix. Search pink milk shake on here and you'll have hours of reading material to support your decision to replace the radiator. There is also a bypass option but by the looks of your radiator, I would just replace it. If you get a pink milk shake, you will most likely need to replace the transmission.

Both of these items are relatively cheap for the piece of mind you'll have. Here is a link to the 3rd gen buyers guide which goes into more details about the LBJ's and radiator, I suggest you take a look at it.

Good luck and enjoy your new rig!
I think the first time it gets in to the shop here at the end of the month will be:
  • Radiator
  • LBJs
  • Power steering hose
  • Possibly water pump although I may wait to do this until timing belt later in the year

I got the A/C recharged yesterday and it blows cold. New suspension parts coming to make the ride tolerable, finding out it sort of rides like a brick. When I can get in with my main mechanic I'll do all the stuff we're talking about here. No sense risking it. Thanks for all the input to everyone, you've convinced me to not be an idiot.

Unless the water pump is leaking or you want to do the timing belt early, then I would wait to replace the water pump and thermostat (jiggle valve at 6 o'clock) until you do the timing belt. The timing belt has to be removed to replace the water pump.

@Bad Luck yeah water pump will likely go with the timing belt in the fall unless upon closer inspection my mechanic tells me it's in dire condition. right now it just looks old

The LBJ wear limit is .5mm - .020", FSM section SA-71 covers the procedure a dial indicator is setup to measure this wear.

"I believe" your call. 96Red's drier chit the bed had to replace evap, hoses, compressor, condensor, drier, hard lines, expansion valve was lot of expense for a $25.00 part. Just saying.

Full list of upgrades and repairs so far

Ok, so I've had the rig for a little while now and I'm pretty happy with it. Owning an SUV again feels like home. However, it needed some work to start with. I had to replace a leaky power steering return line, and the radiator was looking worse for wear so I put in a new Koyorad one.

I went through a significant suspension upgrade that I detailed in another thread. It has made a world of difference, the truck no longer rides like a brick.

I also made some upgrades to the interior while I was at it, largely because I was forced to. The last owner ripped their subwoofer and amplifier out of it like an animal, and had it all in the rear cargo area which I didn't want anyway. Stereo was from 2013, and without an amp, was inop.

In went a new Sony Apple Carplay system along with some nicer Infinity speakers in the front and some midrange JBLs in the back. I had the shop Dynamat all four doors since the panels were already open and I wanted a quieter ride. I only did the main layer they suggested that's mostly for road noise, not for audio quality. It's definitely quieter, although it's not a Benz or anything.

Also added was a Kenwood backup camera on a license plate frame and the Garmin Mini dashcam. I wanted everything to be hidden away and discrete.

The only thing left to do on the rig is to swap out the driver's seat cushion, which I'll probably do tonight or tomorrow, and try to work out how to move the jammed/dead lumbar support out of the full and upright locked position.

Otherwise, she's running great and is almost complete for what I have planned for her in 2021. Here's my full list of upgrades.
  • OEM lower and upper ball joints
  • ACDELCO OEM replacement coils
  • KYB KG54317 shocks
  • KYB KG9025 struts
  • Mevotech tie rods
  • Mevotech sway bar links
  • Energy suspension sway bar bushings
  • Energy suspension bump stops
  • Garmin Mini dashcam
  • Dynamat all four doors
  • Infinity Reference front, JBL stage rear speakers
  • JBL stage slim amplifier, put under driver's seat
  • Sony XAVAX1000 stereo
  • Kenwood CMOS backup camera
  • Koyorad radiator
