Just wondering if the general consensus is still the TBU or if getting some quality pads and rotors would be better? I’m starting to get a brake shudder in the front end and will need to be fixing it soon. If i did the TBU I would do the 199mm calipers as to avoid the issues with ABS and everything else so at that point I wonder if some quality pads/rotors would make a bigger difference or vice-verse or if the difference is negligible which also points me towards quality pads/rotors.

Quality rotors and pads are perfectly good for stock or 32 inch tires. In my opinion if you have 33's, armor etc or tow on a regular basis, then I would upgrade Although Tbu uparade is a popular mod it has its own issues.

So even the 199 mm upgrade would be worth it you think? I’m already on 33’s and will be on armor and all that eventually

Imo the 199mm is worth it, and keeps the system more balanced front/rear than the 231mm, though I haven't used the 231mm to compare them. Just my thoughts.

I'm on 32s with all the armor and bumpers, etc, and I'm glad I have the TBU, though the pedal travel/feel is not ideal. I went with Napa calipers and oem rotors and pads, and I have no complaints. The Napa calipers are lifetime warranty and I've gotten them replaced without issue once already. No hint of warping, and I'm 15-1600lbs over stock loaded for a trip.

199mm rotors are thé same as 231mm so you won't have warping issues I think the pads are smaller. With a heavy rig and larger tires it will be a benefit.

What issues would those be? I was not made aware of any side effects.

Due to the larger caliper piston size you will have a softer pedal with more travel compared to stock. Also, the 199 and 231 calipers have the same caliper piston size and the friction material on the brake pads is the same size between the two. The 199 caliper will be physically smaller than the 231 caliper. Both utilize the same rotor size. Both will require trimming the stock dust shield for the caliper to clear.

Mostly abs issues, spongy brake pedal, brake pedal travel to far down before stop. Driving in snow and ice truck won stop because of abs activating.

I dunno what I did different but I have a firmer pedal and even better stopping power in rain with ABS with the TBU than before with my tired old stock brakes.

I think the main benefit would be less warped rotors so if you find yourself with death wobbles when you get on the brakes on a hill, the TBU will take care of that. If death wobbles are not an issue, then a good set of quality pads front and back does go a long way to refreshing the brakes.

I did the 199 TBU, my stopping power is so much better. I haven’t had any issues with stopping in rain, haven’t been in snow yet with them. Since I was in there I also changed out the brake lines to stainless steel. I don’t have a spongy pedal.

Not to hijack this thread, but it is related…

I scored some calipers off EBay, finally, but now I am a bit concerned with one of the pistons. See the picture below, but looks like in a mad rush to get the pistons open far enough to remove the pads (by the seller I am assuming), one of the pistons was gouged on the edges. Although not ideal, would this need to be replaced?

The inside (ID) doesn't contact anything. You could make sure the face of the piston is flat/square and doesn't have any protrusions that would apply pressure to the pad unevenly. As long as the seals are in good shape and the OD of the piston isn't marred, you should be good.

Excellent! I kind of thought the same thing - it’s about the pressure on the pad being of equal distribution. Thanks for the confirmation.

I will be buying the rebuild kit for the calipers, so everything will get replaced, except the pistons of course.

so recently got a 2000. Brake pedal was soft-ish. Kind of felt like my old 2000 that had the 231 TBU and had a softish pedal, that I got used to, and never had an issue with on rain or snow. On that one I did panic brake a few times in gravel to check if ABS ws working, and it was.
So Ive discovered that my new to me has had the TBU put in...and it is the 199's

So....what IM getting at....is I have had the TBU with the 199 and the 231's and the pedal felt the same with both..I dont think there is a difference with 199's or 231's as far as pedal feel..both softer than the stocks.
I could be wrong if one is better than other as far as pedal and braking responce.

I have ordered new wheel cylinders for the back ( as one had a slight leak it looked), and new master, stainless lines, a check valve for the booster., speed bleeders. then I will bleed the system real good, several times.
