Yet another TBU, yet another report of soft pedal feel. Always wondered if this could just be remedied by swapping the master as well.

Would make sense if you need to move a larger volume of fluid. Is there a bigger direct fit master available?
I've always thought the brakes were adequate on my '97 SR5, but I don't tow.

The corresponding Tundra master should bolt right up if I'm not mistaken. I believe a few have gone the extra mile and done it but it's certainly less than a handful for whatever reason

A few years ago I put 4 piston calipers on the front of my old Honda and found out after the 1st drive I was going to need to change the master. Went from 13/16" to 15/16" and made a huge pedal feel improvement.

is it the 231mm or the 199mm? Perhaps soft pedal can be remedied with a rebuild of the MC and more brake bleeding

wow...i did not know this was going to turn into a brake master cylinder discussion. But funny enough...I have a rear wheel cylinder that leaks so I have new wheel cylinders coming as well as new brake hoses front and back...and was thinking of doing a new master cylinder while at it.....as that would be the only old thing left....
so now.....without changing out booster....wonder what master I can switch too
and dont say chevy....I have seen websites that list the GM master cylinder for this fix....and I wont do it.....no cheby master cylinder for me.
ive driven these 4runners with the TBU and soft pedal for so many years...now it does not bug me much

Which of the TBU calipers does your Hilander have? If I am not mistaken there are 2 types. Ones that are the same size rotor except the rotors are wider. Or the ones that require the 17 inch wheels with the larger rotor diameters.
Anyways, if you have leaking wheel cylinders. I change those and bleed the system well. Then adjust the back brake shoes up. Might just fix up your softer pedal.

when I first got it....it had a soft pedal and a way sloppy ebrake. So one of the fitst things I did was pull drums to inspect. thats when I found it had a very slight leaking wheel cylinder, and thus ordered wheel cylinders. and new SS hoses for all .
being in a giant hurry that day, I did not pay much attention to the calipers...other than bleed the system and adjust the ebrake at drums....and then of course yank the ebrake about 20 times....
it was not until today, inspecting other things on the front end that all of a sudden i noticed....wow...those are the 13we calipers..... the 199's...then I noticed the thicker rotors....how could i not notice earlier...cause the day b4 I had to do brakes on a 2016 ford f250 so did not notice the big brakes on the 4runner
but yep...old ....rusty..but yep at some point in this 4runners life it got a TBU

i think the Tundra has LSPV. If your 4Runner doesn't have LSPV, then the Tundra MC may not be compatible.

the 1999-2006 Tundra has only one brake rotor size. However, the earlier 199mm calipers were updated to the bigger 231mm calipers and bigger brake pads but rotor size remained the same.

Pretty sure it’s the t100 brake master.. if you go on opt offroads IG page in his saved stories one of them is the t100 master upgrade. It looked like a decent amount of work, he had to shorten the shaft that connects to the brake pedal and also had to install it upside down.

Sounds like a score! I'm getting ready to do the TBU on my 99 when I install my new Toytec coilovers tonight after work. Finally will be able to get rid of the "college-kid" installed spacer lift with the springs on the wrong side of course!
