Transmission help… I think my clutch went.

I was driving today and heading up a hill (already doin like 35/40) I added some throttle to get it up the hill in 4th but I was still slowing down so I downshifted figuring I guess I need a bit more. Get into third up to about 3k it pulls and then nothing… revs climb but no acceleration. I think oh just a little clutch slip no big deal I’ll figure it out later. Take my girlfriend out for a ride and going up another hill I feel the same thing. Now I’m worried. On the way home no problems until I hit another hill… this time it’s bad nothing in third or second. I roll to the stop sign and I’m smoking. Alright I’ve burnt the clutch quite a bit. It smells terrible. I don’t know much about servicing a manual… is this something as simple as I don’t have enough trans fluid or do I need a new clutch or is it even worse?

I got it towed to my mechanic but I just wanna have some knowledge before talking to him.

Sounds like you will need a clutch job. How many miles do u have on the clutch?

Good luck

If you overheated the clutch bad enough, you will have cracks on clutch wear surface of the flywheel. If the flywheel is really over heated, if will be heat tempered and blueish color. It may even have deep cracks in it to where no resurfacing will be enough to get rid of it. You may need a flywheel too.

The pressure plate and disk is toast, literally. Those and a new release bearing and you should be good to go.

If you have extra coin, you could also replace the rear main seal of the engine and the input shaft seal on the trans while the engine and trans are separated.

The original clutch lasted 2 owners and 170k miles before getting to me already messed up. Just before I replaced the clutch it felt very short and sensitive.

I just bought this truck not sure if/when the clutch was last done. I definitely made some mistakes when buying this and should’ve dig deeper into the transmission.

Swapping in a used manual transmission may also be an option, but they can be very hard to find due to the auto transmission guys snatching them up and putting them in.

It’s going to be around 8 hours shop time at a shop that is well set up to do it. Plus materials of course.

I inquired at a clutch specialist shop who said they could do it in 1 work day. I did it myself with a floor transmission jack in 18 hours working alone.

If caught early you could have got away with a clutch kit for a couple hundred. But it sounds like you need a flywheel now too.

It’s not a cheap repair but if you are good with a standard you’ll never have to do it again. Edit: It'll be a long time before you have to do it again.

I agree with the others. My 5 speed clutch got so bad that it would decamp before I pulled the transmission out.

Mine was bad when I bought the truck and the PO tried to hide it by adjusting the pedal and putting an extra spring in. The dead giveaway was the cruise control would've work.

My flywheel is not only blue and has cracks in it.

So yes what you are experiencing is a warn out clutch.

If you have the space and tools, do the job yourself. If you bring it to a shop, be prepared to part with a decent amount of money.

I bet the previous owners knew it was going out. It's way too convenient that it goes out on you right after you bought it. They didn't want to spend the money on the repair so they put it up for sale. This shit happens all the time.

Why would he need to swap the transmission for a burnt clutch/pressure plate/flywheel? Am I missing something?

IDK why would you replace a transmission the only thing wrong was the clutch went out? Its a wear item that will eventually get used up like brakes.

I just checked my vehicle records, didn't replace the clutch like I thought, replaced the spring because it was worn to the point it didn't return to position (probably why it felt short).

Sorry I think I was a bit tired when I posted last and read it wrong. I thought he was asking about the transmission, not the clutch itself.
