FJ80 and their Lexus LX450 counterparts look practically identical besides badging and the grill

You're not gonna find another one like it again if you get rid of it. I would only sell it if you absolutely had to.

Gosh, seeing the pics, I wouldn't get rid of either one. Sorry, I know that's no help to you. Those vehicles look nice!

Sell the 4runner. Here is my reasoning why:

1. You don't off-road with it. I think one of the biggest benefits to a 3rd Gen 4runner is its strong off road capability (and "low cost" modding/service.) The Lexus (and any similar Land Cruiser model from that time) are going to be significantly more comfortable rides for your family now and in the future. And, if you decide to go off-road some day, they can be built for that as well.

2. It's current value. The 3rd Gen 4runner is extremely popular at the moment and I'll explain *below in more detail why that value may be short term. But long story short you don't have too much value to gain on this in the next 5 years. I've seen a lot of threads about value of these vehicles but if you put that T4R on BAT I promise you will get some hits.

3. Your wife. She'll be happy about it.

[*Currently used cars have high values due to the global chip shortage causing a significant lull in the car market (manufacturing / logistics primarily but one could say this stifles innovation as well.) Once the big manufacturers have access to the necessary tech (as infrastructure bills like the one passing in the senate today will attempt to help supply) you will see a lot more vehicles on the market at a lot more aggressive pricing. The reason this impact the value of a truck like the 3rd Gen 4runner is the buyers. "Overlanding" has grown significantly in popularity in the last 5 years and COVID accelerated this trend. Cars like the 3rd Gen T4R, the Pathfinder, 90's Land Cruisers, and 90's Cherokees have seen extreme demand. Now, once the automakers (who are well aware of this trend) are able to get cars back onto the market that can truly compete with this used car market, you will see people return to buying/leasing new cars. These cars will be crossovers, off-road capable SUV's, etc. and they will drive down the value of comparable used cars.]

You can also purchase 2 nice cars later when you can really afford them. By the time your child goes to college, it will cost between $120,000 to $150,000 for an undergraduate degree. I am from NC and a commercial banker. I just spent $120,000 for our sons undergrad and MBA. I was raised on a large tobacco farm and our parents paid for our college and my wife and i could not see making him get a student loan. I sub-contracted out our home myself, drove half the nails in it, painted it, landscaped it, and helped my plumber install the irrigation. I also financed it for 15 years and as soon as I made my last payment, I put the same amount as the mgt. payment($1500) each month in a 529. I made my last payment in the 529 the yr that he obtained his undergrad degree. He graduated magna cum laude....and puts $1500 a month in a MMK savings also. My neighbors couldn't believe it ..they all drove new Suburbans, Tahoes, and GMC 4x4 trucks. Now its time for their kids to go to college and none of the have saved a dime to pay for it either.
If you want to get ahead in life be a saver, not a spender. If you want to put a ball and chain (student loan) around your child's ankle for the next 15 years of their adult life, keep both cars. But you will never get ahead in life buying depreciating assets.
Michael
Good for you, nobody on a Toyota forum gives a crap. Last time I checked, 20+ Toyota trucks in high demand have certainly hit the bottom of their respective depreciation curves.

And to speculate on someone's financial situation, and then have the audacity to give them financial advice, only serves to feed your own narcissism. Take your virtue signaling elsewhere.

Happy wife happy life. You wont find another 3rd gen 4runner with that few miles ever again, but assuming the marriage is happy you will have an even harder time replacing a spouse. For that reason I would go with selling the 4runner, and you should get some good money for it right now.

Just make sure you explain that the 4runner is sorted while the Lexus isn't. I don't quite understand why she needs both the family vehicles to be practical. If she drives the GX and it is the vehicle that most family trips are driven it, then why cant your car be the 4runner.

Hot take: if your wife is willing to leave you over something as superficial as a car - YOUR car - then she wasn't worth marrying in the first place and it was already doomed to fail I would hope she's better than that!
Really though this is exactly how im leaning; its not her car so why does she feel she NEEDS both the LX and GX?
It seems like there's a lot of people saying sell it because you don't offroad it and that seems a little weird to reduce a 4Runners worth down to that - to say it's only worth keeping if you plan to destroy its value by thrashing it offroad. By that metric only drifters with deep pockets should be allowed to own Japanese sports cars. There's a lot of beauty in keeping a car bonestock
Idk, just my unsolicited 2 cents

For the record, my wife is amazing. At the end of the day, if I said I am keeping the T4R she might not like it but would be fine after a few days. The “D” word (divorce) is not even in our vocabulary, FWIW.

If I told her that I spent $10k on the T4R and wanted to keep it, she wouldn’t bat an eye. It’s the fact that I’ve got basically the same amount of $ in the T4R as the LX. I really value the cream puff near perfection that this T4R is....her, not so much.

Luckily, I’m not in a big rush. My opinion flip flops just about every day so who knows where I’ll end up

Well, then if you are anything like me you'll keep both...

(for a number of years I had two 2L, turbocharged, 5-speed manual, AWD cars...)
