Few Pics - 2002 SE - Thundercloud - Black SR5 Wheels - Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain +

I wanted to post up a few pictures for posterity to help any others in their searches for information and pics when they want ideas for their own Runners. I looked for a long, long time trying to find black painted 5th gen SR5 wheels that weren't just a plasti-dip adventure, and only found a few, but those weren't enough to give me the mental picture I needed to make a decision on painting mine. I also wanted some new tires and had settled on Pirelli's Scorpion All Terrain Plus, and those pictures were pretty rare as well. So, here goes.

Picked up a set of 2020 SR5 wheels locally for $150 and started sanding to get a good scuffed surface for the paint to adhere to. The paint didn't turn out perfect by any means but it looked good enough to roll with. I used Rust-Oleum self etching primer, and VHT black gloss and topped off with VHT gloss clearcoat. 2 coats of primer, 3 of paint, and 3 of clearcoat.

I got them mounted up with the new tires. Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus in P265/70R17. Really impressed with the tires so far though just a few hundred miles on them. Will update impressions as time goes on. Very quiet, smooth, balanced well, and I think they look great. I recently installed JBA UCA's right after the wheels/tires so I'll get some updated pics/impressions soon. Thanks for looking!

Those look fantastic!

So the 2020 SR5 wheels fit without any mods?

Pirelli makes tires that have outstanding performance tires for sedans and go-fast cars. I wonder how their A/T tire is? I've never heard anything about them.

Yeah @DirtDrift looks good and I’m also looking forward to a tire review after a couple thousand miles

I already had my Bilstein lift installed when I upgraded to those wheels with the factory Dunlops in 265/70R17, and since then there has been zero rubbing. I have also heard that some people are able to fit those same wheels and tires without any lift modification.

Definitely will. I think they have a ton of potential to expand the Scorpion models if these hold up well. I only drive about 7,000 miles a year so it may be slow coming, but winter is around the corner. So far I have been driving them in complete downpour rainstorms for the past week straight with zero issues.

I'm running the same wheels and OEM (5th gen 4Runner) Dunlops on my stock suspension '02 also, no rubbing or mods needed, even reused my existing lug nuts.

Quick update:

It's been about 3,000 miles since I posted this thread and I thought I'd update on the tires. So far I am really impressed. I have not done any heavy offroading as most of my driving consists of fire roads and light trails. Most of those trails consist of medium sized rocks, potholes, and a few trenches here and there that get some good articulation going. Overall traction is fantastic.

- Rocky yet level road - No punctures, aired to 20-25psi. Great traction and steering.
- Highway speeds up to 75mph - I cannot believe how quiet these tires are. They are definitely a little noisier than street rated tires, but nowhere near the other A/T tires I've experienced.
- MPG - Coming recently from Michellin Defender's and Dunlop GrandTrek's, I think I've lost maybe 1-2mpg? I'm not a lead foot though. Hard to tell as I am driving more overall than I normally do.
- Rain/Wet - Great traction. No hydroplaning. I've been through a few awesome downpoor's and these tires are definitely confidence inspiring.
- Snow/Slush - Received about 14" of fresh snow last night and had a nasty commute to work this morning. First test with them in the snow. Stopping is great, as is steering. I don't shovel my driveway because I'm a lazy bastard, it's gravel, and because 4wd. That said, there was a 2 1/2 - 3 foot pile of snow at the end of my driveway from the plows. I gave it a small amount of gas to get through it, and a non-locked transfer case went through it like it wasn't there. These might be the best snow A/T's I've driven on, maybe only the Duratrac is better.
- Ice - Same as any other tire, nothing groundbreaking here. Unless you've got studded tires you'll likely not see much of a difference. That said, they were not worse, and that's a good thing.

I'll update again as mileage continues. Wear is very negligible, if any, maybe a 32nd? Tires I've driven on for comparison to similar conditions in the past include KO2's, Duratrac's, GrandTrek's, Michellin Defender's, and Dynapro ATM's.

Our 06 SR5 came from the factory with Dunlops. Wasn't very impressed, but factory tires are often not the top of the line for a manufacturer.

Coming to the close of my second winter in these tires and I’m just as happy as can be. Salt Lake valley got about 12-18” of snow the last few days and my commutes were slow but uneventful. I forgot to post last year but I like and trusted the tires enough that I put the same size and model on my wife’s 2002 Limited. She’s a happy camper.

A year and a half into ownership and I’ve put about 10,000 miles on them so far. Still as quiet as the day they were installed. I cross rotate them every 6 months to keep feathering down so that helps a bit with any potential noise issues. I haven’t measured tread depth but just eyeballing them they look to be about 10/32nds tread left. When new they are 12/32nds.

We recently purchased a Sequoia to replace my Sport Edition. I’m taking over the wife’s 2002 Limited and reluctantly putting up the SE for sale. Needless to say, the Sequoia will be getting the Pirelli’s in a few weeks. I’m just that happy with them.

Good looking truck. Those wheels came out great. I bought the perellis because the Michelin defenders were out of budget for us. I vé had the pirelli's for about 20k+miles and they have been great in all kinds of conditions.
