Rear axle options for 2001 limited with ABS

A good friend of mine has to get a new rear axle for his 2001 limited with ABS. We have verified the ratio as 4.10 with the spin test, this matches the axle code on the door jamb. It does not have an E-locker.

Will any 4.10 axle with ABS from a third gen work as a replacement? Is a Tacoma axle an option?

He picked one up from a yard last night, guy at the junkyard said it was an ABS axle with 4.10s, it ended up being a non-ABS with 3.90s....awesome.

Yes all year rear axles will fit, but the brakes for the 2001-2002 are different. If you throw a complete axle in there it will work (I have done it on my 2001) but there are some unknowns as in does the abs system mesh properly. A tacoma axle is only the same on the e-locked rear axles, but you have to remove the mount for the leaf spring and weld on a mount for the coils. Not worth it unless you are desperate and good with a welder

Is the housing on his '01 shot or is it another issue? If it's just the housing is rusted through, you can swap all the stuff from the '01 axle onto the other one, diff included, assuming neither is an elocker axle.

ETA - this assumes a non-ABS axle has the fittings for ABS sensors and they're just blocked off. I don't know if that's the case.

Thanks. I forgot the Tacoma axles had leafs. Also good to know about the brakes being not identical. It appears that the easiest way to go is to find a 2001-2002.

The housing itself is shot....rusted through at the center. Also the one axle seal is wasted. He was looking to kill 2 birds with one stone. The non-ABS axle he got did not have the provisions for the ABS sensors. The bosses for the sensors are integrated into the end of the axle tube, they are part of the tube. The axle he got from the junkyard just didn't have the provisions for ABS, nothing was blocked off per say.

You will need an axle from a 96-02 with abs. 01-02 would be a direct swap. All other years will require transferring the brake line components over. Tacoma axles are missing all the suspension mounts needed for a 4Runner.
