Some Questions About Brake Upgrades
I am getting ready to do the tundra brake upgrade. I would like to replace my master cylinder as well. I was just on rockauto.com and noticed that they want $109 for an Advics master cylinder BMT-035 for 4runner, but only want $68 for a Landcruiser FJ80 Advics master cylinder BMT-046. I think the only difference is in the orientation of the port connections. I am also pretty sure that the Land Cruiser masters have residual valves for the rear brakes, however the notes for the 4runner master cylinder BMT-035 indicate that it is suitable for rear disc brake applications. Do you see any reason why I shouldn’t order the substantially less expensive Landcruiser part?
An additional note. I have almost everything I need to do a rear disk conversion so I probably want a master cylinder with residual valves.

Some nice calipers that I found at a wrecking yard for $35 each. I see a lot of other yards asking as much as $80 for badly corroded parts.

I vaguely remember something about the bolt pattern being different, but I couldn't tell you for sure.

That would be very un-Toyota-like. Consistency is the best description of the Toyota I know.

My 4runner is just getting ready to pass 300k miles. In addition to brake work, I am thinking of replacing other parts as a matter of preventative maintenance. The timing belt, lower ball joints, shocks, springs, spark plugs, and ignition coils are on my to do list.

There is one other thing I’m going to need to complete this brake upgrade. Wheels! The vehicle currently has Daytona style steel wheels (16”x 8”). I had to grind a small area on the calipers to make them fit. They are definitely not going to fit once I get the Tundra calipers installed. This brake upgrade is the excuse I have been looking for to get the wheels I’ve wanted for a long time. These are 16” x 7 five spoke alloy wheels that seem to have been an option on 4runners from 1998 - 2002

As far as I know, all 3rd gen 4Runner's had a 1" master cylinder bore which is the same as an FJ80. I'm pretty sure the FJ80 is a 4 bolt flange and the 4Runner one is a 2 bolt flange as well. I don't have time to read through all the threads but here's some you might look at:
TBU with a twist
Replace entire Brake system with Tundra's?
Master Cylinder upgrade options

I might have missed it, but are you doing the 231mm brakes? I'm not clear on the caliper markings.

The posters who said that the Land Cruiser master cylinder has a four hole mounting pattern are right. I have mostly worked with older Toyota pickups and 4runners where the Landcruiser master cylinder is considered an upgrade for disk brake conversions. They share four hole mounting pattern as well. It seems that the third generation 4runner was the first to get the two hole. Thanks to those who gave me the correct information.
