4 runner died while driving
My daughter was drive her 1996 4 runner down the road and lost all power and the 4 runner died. Now when you try to start it nothing happens at all. All accessories work, horn, radio etc.. Put load tester on battery and it checks good. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Are you saying the motor doesn't turn over or the motor doesn't fire up?

That might be way it doesn't crank, but that couldn't cause it to quit running while driving down the road. I'm going to pull the started and check it out.
Thanks

Could it possibly be the coil packs on the spark plugs? My old Honda did this and the distributor was fried. Just throwing ideas out. Good luck.

We had a similar problem on the road recently. We did a lot of trouble shooting and checked the gas cap, idle air control valve, coil packs, battery and fuses.
It ended up being the mass air flow sensor. It's easy to pull and inspect. This one had a piece of fur/lint from a shop rag or something similar. Clean, reinstalled and back on the road.

will it cank over, but not start, or just not crank? does it make a "click click click" sounds when trying to start?

If it suddenly died on the road and won't crank at all, it isn't going to be the starter or the dist or the timing belt. I too want to know if there's a click or a whir when the key is turned, and I'd be looking to see if the motor turns over manually with a breaker bar.

Happened to my old sport trac too. Check the alternator, batt, all electrical connections. Mine just so happened to be both a bad battery and a bad alternator

I had something similar happen to my previous truck (Ford). The ground on the alternator came loose. Thats what I would check.

Neutral safety switch, clutch safety switch? Bad ground? Dodge Neons would do that, was bad ground.

Why is it always the ford guys that turn into toyota guys? I loved my ford but ended up loving my yota more.

Mine did this last week. I changed the brushes on my alt a few weeks ago. It had been running fine since then. Last Wednesday, I noticed the idle got low at times when I came to a stop, and the voltage dropped pretty fast. If I gave a little gas, it went back up.
I was on the interstate coming home Friday and traffic built up, so I had to stop rather quickly...damn thing died on me! I put it in park, and it started right up. Its not my alternator, as it continues to charge my battery...I never have a problem starting.
It hasn't died on me since, but the idle and voltage still drops on me. I'm going to check the MAF sensor when I get home tonight...hopefully that just needs cleaned.
