Might just need a valve adjustment.

if it runs smooth not terribly concerning. But a valve adjustment as mentioned above may get everything lined up better for you.

Is the valve adjustment really going to make things better? I know that 203k mileage is not that much for a diesel engine, but still, its age could prove to be a problem. Even with small overall mileage, motors tend to alter in time, and the one you mentioned is almost twenty years old. I would definitely buy it for the right price, given that you have room for other repair works should they be needed. Also, it would be best if you considered buying from a car wreckers yard. Other defects could appear in time.

Yes I agree with the others. Probably needs valve adjusted.

Probably, mostly when the engines get close to 250k to 300K they definitely need valve adjustments. So if your over 200K, the valves are starting to go out of adjustment. If they exhaust valve looses clearance on the buckets, they start to not close properly, thus start loosing compression on that cylinder.

Yes, it can if the valves are out of adjustment and the cylinders are losing compression past valves that aren't fully seating. Also, valves not fully seating can cause the valve seats to deteriorate and also burn a hole in the side of the valve which forces you to remove the heads and get them rebuilt.

At 126k miles I don’t think it’s valves. But you never know.

A leak down check would tell the story.

But like mentioned, and in the three engines I did the valve adjustment on, it’s the exhaust valves that require most of the adjustments.

I do know its alot easier to adjust valves or do head gasket changes with the engine out of the vehicle then in.

Granted, folks can do as they wish. Something is causing that one cylinder to be lower. That leaves valve , rings or head gasket. As most likely the cause.

Not adjusting the valves will cause bigger issues with compression. Best to get it done. I wish I had checked my compression before and after I did my adjustments.

You can’t properly baseline compression without adjusting the valves first.
