Solved: Should a 2001 SR5 use a transponder key?

I recently had an extra key made at a hardware store, and it starts the car just fine.

Granted, there's all sorts of weirdness left from PO, such as aftermarket alarm.

But was this a standard feature of 2001s? Trying to figure out if he somehow removed or disabled it, or if it never existed.

Thanks! You guys are the best!

Edit: Solved--it does not have a transponder

I had Thought that as of 2001, all the 4runners had transponder keys. But there have been surprises before with regards to keys, if Any would have a basic key it would be the SR5.

It's not really possible to Remove the immobilizer as it's integral to the body ECU (box that lives behind the glovebox). About the only way I can think to defeat it would be to take the ring that sends/receives the signal and fasten a chip/old key to it, tucking it up out of the way. Not sure if that ring is visible/part of the trim or not. Similarly, I don't believe any aftermarket Alarm system would touch that system... no real point (it's a simple comparison of the number on the key to what's stored on the ECU).

Are you sure the copy you had made wasn't a Clone? Did they drop the 2 keys into a couple cups on a electronic device? And did you pay more than about $15?

*EDIT*

Looks like there would be the SECURITY word (and light) just to the right of the rear window switch if you have the Immobilizer/transponder key, on the plastic that shows the passenger airbag wording/light.

My 2001 does not have a chip. Its also a different key for the ignition than the doors. I assumed a PO lost the keys and rather than pay the dealer just had a new ignition lock put in while disabling the chip alarm. Doesn't bother me as it ism easier to get keys for it as there is no official dealer in the islands

The key was not expensive, just a few bucks I think, so not special.

I'm convinced now that it never had the transponder, which I'm glad for; less hassle to deal with.

Thanks for the info.

Strange enough mine does not have a transponder and any cut key works. I also have a 2000 Toyota MR2 spyder I just figured out has a transponder key when I made a key at Home Depot. Works in door and ignition but car won’t start and now has check engine light I need to resolve. Weird to me in 2000 they had transponder keys and my 2002 runner doesn’t. Maybe because it’s a convertible but who knows for sure.

My 2001 does not have a transponder. I got a new key cut from an OEM blank at home depot and it worked fine.
