Removing fender flares from 3rd gen

I think I may have the answer, but wanted to double check with people smarter than myself.

Are the 3rd gen fender flares removable without leaving holes or other signs of having been there? I've been toying with the idea of removing them. I have an '01 SR5 completely stock and the silver paint on the flares is peeling off, perhaps because it was painted on plastic without any kind of primer or other prep (PO repainted the whole truck which is otherwise in great shape). It's not that noticeable yet, but I kind of like the no-flare look anyway and thought I might just take them off if it won't detract from the looks.
Thanks.

Do you have any photos?

I can't speak to all the different fender styles, but the so-called "large painted overfenders" that were an option on the SR-5s (Limited-style, like on my truck, see my avatar or build thread in signature) do have holes in the metal underneath.

If they are the larger flares, they will leave holes in the fenders.

Only the core strips don't have holes. The limited cladding has holes everywhere on all third gen 4 runners. Sometimes referred to as large flares that cover fenders, bottom doors and rocker panels.

I looked into this briefly when I first got my Limited. Holes galore. Decided I'd live with plastic stuff. Below is a link to a thread where a member pulled, painted, and reinstalled some flares/cladding which should give you an idea of what's going on under there....Limited Fender Flare / Cladding Removal and Re-Install - Toyota 4Runner Forum - Largest 4Runner Forum

Pic from that thread tells the tale:

OK guys, that pretty much answers the question. Appreciate all the quick responses. Pretty sure there will be holes under there. I can live with the flares.
Thanks again. Ed

Does anyone know where to get the stock black sr5 fender flares? Lost the rear passenger side flares in a drive thru car wash.

I believe there are only holes on the limiteds. I ripped the flares off mine and have holes, I kinda like how it looks though.
