Finally, some good news.

It's not completely done, but the guys at the shop finally stopped just doing nothing and actually went and put the thing together.

I'm not happy with their work ethic but I'll admit they did a good job at fixing it for what it was. I'm planning to re-satoshi the grill (and make it better than it was before) while still retaining its' stock appearance. Got some other goodies in the mail as well during my wait.

Updated "To-do" mod list, AKA I have all the parts and just need to install:

-RX300 sunvisors with extensions and homelink
-Rear door OEM "Lemmeout 2.0" (1999 OEM door handle)
-Toyota Matrix 115v outlet mod (with power inverter)
--also got the coin holder
-OEM security light from '01 (as mine was broken)
-ScanGauge II - will mount in steering column plastic
-OEM foglight stalk
-Rear seat 99+ headrest holders for when the seats are down
-Rear door OEM hatch light mod (OEM Housing)
-Carplay Double Din radio
-Garmin Dash Mini II dashcam
-Overhead USB behind headliner (to power dashcam and another mod that I don't have ready yet)
-GNTX-177 Autodimming mirror mod (w/ compass and temp) (to make up for the lack of a field unit and to save a din slot)
-New dashboard (have to install myself of course)
-B&M 70268 transmission cooler
-32" light bar under front bumper
-aux fuse box from 99-06 VW Golf, Jetta & Beetle
-Interior mood lighting

In the works:
-99+ Center dash console retrofit (dont have everything yet but should be in the mail soon)
-PRNDL plastic cover replacement
-New horn, to replace the late '91 Merc horn (not sure what I'll use this time but I'll find something.)

unfortunately, as has become the norm, it's still not done, despite them sending me that picture and dropping off a new battery because they ruined my old one. Despite that, I've been working more on my new things. As some may have noticed the plastic valence for the front bumper isn't there. I actually am planning to mount a 32" light bar there.

I got the light bar this week, and had one other ace up my sleeve. Some early 2000's VWs have an auxiliary fuse box that can be bought separately for 12$ on amazon...I think you can see where I'm going here.

The lightbar was stupid simple to wire up, and I'm replacing the switch it came with with an OEM switch that I hope to find soon. It passes through the fuse box (that came with three 30a fuses) which in turn connects to the positive battery terminal. I plan to get some new terminals soon that will allow me to add other accessories. The fuse box has space for five accessories that I can add in the future, and I can also hook three more up to the 30A fuses with a small jumper cable, for a total of 8.

Are you buying the connector that goes with the fuse box or are you going off the fuse bars in the box?

The fuse bars in the box. The light bar has a fuse on it already which I'm just going to use so I can save the 30A fuses for later. With some continuity testing, and from what I saw, the female connector can supply power to what could be three accessories, however as I'm yet to use it, I'm just going to leave it unused.

Gotcha. I wasn't sure if you had a part number or link for the connector that goes with the fuse block.

RodrickHeffley's 1998 Limited Build (w/ pictures)

Basically, I got it back today. The shop didn't do a great job but they've got it together. It's idling rough @ 400rpms (someone help please) but no CELs for that yet. They broke several interior pieces but thankfully I was able to fix the kick panel under the steering wheel and had to actually take off the steering wheel and fix that as they didn't install it right w/ the clock spring.

Other things: Got my new dash kick panel installed, got the window switches fixed that they broke, installed the new security light/mic and installed the scangauge above the steering wheel as I had it off anyway so figured I'd save myself some time. I also re-installed my old air box as they said it was "unusable" and left it just disconnected.

more to come very soon, have to get it cleaned as somehow they made it absolutely filthy and need to do some more small fixes for things they messed up, but it's back and that's what matters

Yesterday and today I got the Gentex 177 mirror that I got out of a 2000 Yukon installed.

Since I don't have a field monitor (or the din for one either) this was my next best choice. It has all the features but the altimeter.
When I did the 99+ Overhead mod, I unknowingly (at the time) left a blue 12v wire that was used for the old relay disconnected like you're supposed to. This seemingly useless wire at the time came in very handy later. I was doing research into what to tap into so I went and looked at the install for that, and was scrolling through until I saw it. Seeing that made everything way easier.

EDIT:I actually ended up switching it to the switched power wire that the sunroof operates through for both this and my dashcam because it was draining the battery.

This provides constant power and was the perfect wire for me to tap into as it didn't require any bridge connectors. I wired up the two USB ports and the mirror to the same one. One USB is for the Garmin dash cam that isn't pictured. Getting the mirror installed was easy. I tapped into said power wire, then connected the other ground wire to the ground for the sunroof.

I ran two wires through the firewall with a coathanger for the temp sensor and mounted it below the drivers' side headlight. I ran it beneath the dash panel, between the weather stripping and the dash, then up towards the A-Pillar. I couldn't get the loctite off the two screws on the A-Pillar so I just ran the wire between it and the windshield for now, which is actually hard to notice unless you're looking for it, then ran them up above the headliner (also temporary until I get the A-Pillar off) and to the mirror.

I routed the main power cable for the mirror and the USBs through the mirror passthrough on the overhead, which provides a nice clean way to hide them. The two to the left there are for the temp sensor.

The hardest part for sure was getting the thing to work in the first place. This picture is my attempt to use the OEM mirror mount, which would work. However, it'd be best to do that approach if you have the 96-98 overhead, which it will fit with, with the sunglasses/garage door opener holder, there was no space for the mirror and I wouldn't be able to open the holder. As I suspected, I had to mount it to the windshield, which wasn't too big of a hassle because I had the things to mount it already, as I had a feeling I couldn't mount it OEM-style.

This here is a picture of what you COULD do if you had the 96-98 overhead.

It powered on the first time, then when I went to route the wires, it got stuck in a strange mode where the compass was trying to calibrate and the temp sensor was suck on -40 degrees C. I had no clue what to do to fix that after doing about an hours worth of googling so called it a night. The next morning (today) I installed it and plugged it in and it did the same thing but said -35 F this time. I let it sit for about an hour and in that time it fixed itself, so my biggest problem had no reasonable solution.

Finished product, planning to wrap the wires together properly once I have the temp wires in the correct place.

Anyway, that's about it for this one, looking to do some more stuff soon when I have access to a soldering iron and a better toolset at my friends house. I'm pretty happy with this one and how it turned out (especially once it started to work) as this mod got me set on the rabbithole of everything else I have to do. I installed one of these in a buddys Dakota but was excited to do it on my own truck.

Been busy with work and trying to chase down the cause of my P0171 code that I haven't had much time to do much for the 4runner. Today I got around to installing the Toyota Matrix inverter and plug that I got a few months ago. Wiring was difficult as it was spread across two forums and four posts, but I sat down with a 9V drill battery and got to work and finally understand what goes where.

In order to install this, I'd have to pull power straight from the battery, which was the perfect time for me to install the aux fuse box that early 2000s VWs have. It was very easy to install, you just put the terminal on and put somewhere to mount it:

I decided for this box as it could pull a lot of power to pass it through one of the three fuses on the box. With those three fuses as well as the five bars, you have an additional eight areas to install things--for very cheap too!
Not the best way to mount it, I know, however I'd like to keep the fuse diagram on the bottom box free from any adhesive so I can see everything there.

Getting all the wiring in was tough, however over the course of about three hours I got it installed.
The inverter was pretty easy to relocate, I put it where the factory amp used to be, giving me tons of room.
I then spliced into the ignition power for the cig lighter to power the switch and we were all set.

To wrap everything up, I installed the switch and the outlet in a temporary spot until I get my '99 center dash upgrade done. Overall, very happy with how it turned out!

Hoping to get my P0171 code fixed soon, I have a contact in Salt Lake who may have a MAF I can buy but I'm waiting to hear back from him.

Been a minute! My first semester of college started in August and I've been swamped. Now that I've gotten that under control, I've focused back onto the 'ol 4runner. I intend to make some writeups about the things I've done since I posted here last, which include the radio upgrade, the sun visors, both of which were a huge PITA, and that's about it actually.

I've found that that Gentex mirror I added in with the temp gauge has actually been really helpful because now I know exactly when my arms will freeze off instead of just hoping they don't, same with the scangauge, helps me keep track of my gas mileage (I've gotten a high of 22.1 MPG somehow on an entire tank), engine temps and others, I intend to write more about the rest when I do proper writeups on them hopefully soon.

One weird issue I was having was with my A/C system, it would only blow cold when I went downhill, but after realizing it was over pressure, I let some out and it started working which dumbfounded me but it's cool I guess.
I also got the P0171 fixed by cleaning out the MAF with some cleaner and finding a extremely obvious vac leak that I couldn't see because I was trying to find it at 1am.
Been pretty smooth! I put about 320mi on it a week and it's been handling like a champ.
I got it back from the shop around 272k and hit 275 last week. Overall, everything is going well, but I'm still ticked at the shop guys for how long it took considering they had all the parts and how they gave it back with more broken than not.

With winter here in the frigid tundra of Utah, I've been trying to make some QOL changes for winter:
Things I've done:
-Replaced drivers wiper arm as it was rusty and not working well
-Replaced the '2' washer sprayers with some '3s' from a 1998 Rav-4 so I can see (at least until the wiper arms freeze)
Things yet to do:
-Add J-Hook adapter to rear wiper so it actually works
-Wire up lightbar to OEM stalk (Waiting to get the rest of the rusty bolts off the front of the frame rails)
-Change interior LEDs to orange so they're less harsh
-3 spoke steering wheel upgrade (Ideally with the buttons)
-Replace rear seat grab handle as somehow I snapped the plastic

Some other things that I'd like to do eventually include adding some heated mirrors so I don't have to hope to high hell I don't cut someone off while merging lanes (thanks salt!)
-Another is maybe adding some kind of blind spot assist, which I believe is possible but I haven't looked into much.
-A taco whip would be nice as my motorized antenna is starting to die on me.
-Down the road I'd also like to swap in some BMW seats but the wiring and bolt attaching looks daunting so I'm putting that off for now.

Last week I had some good tests of the 4runner's capabilities, and by that, I mean UDOT hadn't done a good job on the roads. Last Monday I was going along when suddenly the road went from plowed to not, the rear end swung out and I quickly spun the wheel around so instead of flying into the median barrier I instead went off onto the shoulder which thankfully had no wall, which was scare number one. This Monday I was driving on I-80 when suddenly everyone in front of me stopped which gave me a good time to test out my brakes, which seeing as I'm posting this, worked pretty well.
Only problems I've been having is with salt covering my windshield and my wipers and mirrors freezing so I can't see. Now I get why they call it "SALT" lake I suppose.

You might be asking yourself what I've been doing in the meantime, and to be honest, college has kicked my ass pretty hard.
HOWEVER:
It's given me time to think while I take the bus to school, and I came up with an idea seen here: Interior Fuse panel cover button mount - Looking for feedback

In short, it's a panel that covers the existing interior fuse box while providing more switch areas.

Tomorrow I'm going to four junkyards to grab all the stuff that I plan on using, which is gonna be a process, got a VERY long list, hopefully I get at least some of what I need, normally the stuff I really want is picked clean almost instantly.

Lame update, I know, I've just been so busy that I can't focus on stuff for more than a day or so at a time.

*SNEAK PREVIEW*

After spending the better part of about eight months trying to find a center dash bezel from a 99+, I finally found one. (and it wasn't an absurd price! (about 20$)

Getting the swap done was actually really straightforward once I understood how to repin the connectors. I was dreading that going into it based off of the hellish experiences people have said to have faced doing them, but once I figured out how it was a piece of cake.

The hardest thing for me (and anyone else trying this) was getting the defrost switch to work. I'm no expert solder master, so getting that switch done was a pain. I got one of the wires on myself, and got stuck, so I went to my buddy and he got another on, then I finally called it quits and went to my old boss who does microsoldering and he got the last one on.

Between three people and about two weeks, I got the switch working and installed, before I had it installed I fed the old switch through the keyring plastic and just left it dangling out which looked super stupid.

(HUGE thanks to Leon and his writeup on this, it was extremely helpful!)
(please ignore the hellish 12v lighter wiring, I made better connector wiring with this new update)

Really enjoying having the freed up button spaces on the left, which means my 115v switch from the matrix finally has a proper place to go.

The only troubles I've been having are with the LEDs on the buttons on the new panel. I think that they're all burnt out and finding the 'proper' replacements has been hard as I've been seeing many people saying different things, I'll get around to ordering some soon.

This winter in Utah we got dumped with about 3' of snow almost overnight which has meant the 4runner has been working pretty hard to get me around. A few days ago I was headed up to a friend's house in the mountains and finally got to test out 4LO and my locking rear diff, both of which worked first try! I was happy about that since I (foolishly) actually haven't tested either since getting my 4runner.

College has been kicking me around so I've not had much time to work on the 4runner. During the end of fall and the entirety of winter I've found some things that I'd like to do or adjust. I've been putting together a list of mods that I'd like to get done when spring comes around! However I'm sure that a combination of not being able to find parts and laziness will affect that, we'll see.

Hoping this year will bring more updates when school gets out, but I guess time will tell there.
