Motor rattling

1998 V6
So I've had this slight rattle coming from the engine bay for a little while. 2-3 months. It sounded slightly like an intake leak. I had to do the timing belt and water pump so while that was all apart I made sure that there were no leaks. Put it all back together and sure enough it is still there. When I start the car there is no rattle. But after about 3 minutes I hear the rattle which speeds up under load and when I stop the rattle continues.

I took it to Toyota just to have them diagnosis it and they came back and told me it was my driveshaft and that there was play and that it needed to be rebuilt but that they don't do that there. I took the driveshaft apart and inspected it while lubricating everything. As I was putting it back in I realized that it can't be my driveshaft. Because it freaking rattles at idle. I felt stupid for realizing it later but also irritated that techs at Toyota told me that was the issue .

My next thought was that it must be my tranny starting to go so I took it to AAMCO just to confirm. After two days they got back to me and let me know that it wasn't my tranny but was coming from my passenger side of the engine. They used stethoscopes to find the rattle. They can't tell me what it is without opening it up.

I'm at 250k w original engine and tranny. I barely pass smog every year by the skin of my teeth. I'm thinking of just swapping the motor with another 5vz fe and eventually supercharging it. Should I just tear it apart and try to fix it or just find a motor? If I go the latter does anyone have a reputable place or seller to do so?

With a rattle on the passenger side at idle and it barely passing smog, i would check the catalytic converter and see if it has come apart.

I have one on a parts donor 3rz 4runner that rattles at idle but is fine while driving
