That can be recovered from.... I only had 1 "sub" key, now have 2 master and 1 sub. Cost me under $100 (including key cutting, but my dealer did cut 3 for $0). Steep learning curve, but it's doable by anyone at home if they put in the effort.

Toyota did *NOT* make it easy though. My solution was very much a hack approach. I think a good locksmith could do the same work with some tech tools for under the $1000 Toyota wants for a new body ECU.

I haven't gone through the subscription process yet so I don't have any personal feedback on it.
I am also interested in what people are doing RE: GPS and I think I read that with Bouncie 'the 'OBD' port is used? Is that an under-hood diags port? If it's the 'OBDII' port under the dash that's not going to work for me as I have an ultra gauge there already and that spot seems like it's too easy for a thief to find and toss out the window.

"Compared to similar OBD-port GPS car trackers, Bouncie falls in the middle range when it comes to price. It strikes a good balance between its competitors with a slightly higher initial device cost but no activation fee, a low monthly subscription fee, and no long-term contracts.Sep 18, 2020"

Nevermind - it uses the OBDII port. I think I will need to look more into a Spy on your Spouse version than a Fleet-Management GPS solution.

It does use the OBDII port. You bring up some good points. I know that my friend I got this from used it to keep track of a few cars he rented out on Turo. Since this was a recent gift I haven't really looked into it or other GPS options. I keep my scangauge plugged in while I drive and would probably just swap the 2 when I'm not driving. From my very limited knowledge on the different options it seems like there are trade offs on how/where they install & no doubt the OBDII ones will be easier to install & remove which would defeat the purpose if the primary objective was to be discrete.

I have a kill switch hidden in the interior that disconnects power to the fuel pump. Very simple to install and great peace of mind. I had a 1994 Honda Accord stolen from me back in 2008 so I'm a little sensitive to auto thefts.

My heart goes out to you. My 4runner was stolen in Washington about 5 years ago. I thought I would never see it again, and two weeks later I got a phone call from the police letting me know they recovered it.

I have some documentation in my build thread; basically a couple tweakers lived in it and completely trashed the inside, but mechanically didn't do any damage. It took a good while to get it back to "pre-stolen" condition.

Fingers crossed you get yours back in as least the same condition or better as I got mine. That's a great looking 4runner. Hopefully this will just be another good story about your awesome 4runner in another 5 years.

Ahhhhu yes! That looks familiar. I think I’ve seen something similar before. Looks really stout and reliable. Thanks for sharing that! Might look into getting one.

My 4runner has been found.

The person who was caught with my car was taking off the roof rack early in the morning today...Huge thanks to everyone who shared / posted pics and to everyone who has given me big advice moving forward.

Insurance inspection begins tomorrow or Tuesday then I'll get to see it again. Very stoked.

That's outstanding news! Hope it's at least Mostly unmolested (parts missing are easy to replace).

Hoping they did serious damage to my LCA's somehow so my insurance has to pay for me to replace them (all so I don't have to replace the bushings myself.)

Good news! Make sure you get compensated for the lost value of the vehicle showing stolen, the miles and wear they drove, damage they caused, money you spent on rentals, and a professional cleaning. Who knows what they had in there...
