I wonder what they were doing that messed up the alignment and steering? Sounds like your 4runner went on a really gross Fear and Loathing-esque bender. It sucks but I guess just think of it as adding character (once you get it fixed up) and at least you have a pretty cool story to tell about getting back.

driving over shit with no regard because it's not your vehicle... as exampled by him saying they were spotted driving it through the middle of a park
Driving straight into and over a curb at 25mph will do that pretty quickly

Glad you got it back but what a hassle.
This was my first thought too. There were a few empty bottles in there, you never know. Detailer did a good job but I'm still going to end up replacing the carpet and seats just because it was time to do that already. Since I just had them deep cleaned I can still pass em off to someone looking to do a full upholstery job but even though the carpet is clean that's going straight in the trash....

I have it on good authority that they didn't air down before they drove onto a playground :/

Can't stop wincing and thinking about the thief destroying the ball joints hitting a curb straight on...ugh

I was just thinking about this truck the other day. Truly glad you got it recovered. I cosign the replacing of the seats and carpets after discovering the body fluids on them.

On other note, I do happen to have a spoiler with me. PM me and I can work something out with you.

New update:

So I brought it to my preferred shop for the insurance inspection. Steering was brutal and it was because the steering rack was bent. I honestly think the thief must have hit a curb going pretty fast. My tires didn't look too bad so I think the damage happened shortly before it was recovered. Outside of the couple mile trip I just drove with it, it has only been towed since recovered. The shop noticed alignment issues obviously as well as a few other things. They didn't mention ball joints after their inspection but I'm going to have them jack from the LCA's to check for play to be sure.

....body work quoted at near $5000 lol I have a feeling insurance won't be touching that and this truck is soon to be deemed a total loss.

Maybe you can find another door at a salvage yard and have Maaco paint match it. I just had an impromptu cat and o2 sensor delete done by tweakers on my other 4runner. My insurance deductible is $1000 about the same as the parts, it's a bolt on repair at least. I'm looking in to replacing both rear cats (there's 4 total) with a URD y-pipe so there's nothing there for them to steal.

I think it was from auto zone. Here’s a version of it on Amazon Amazon.com: The Club CL606 Brake Lock Vehicle Anti-Theft Device : Automotive

I think this is the one that I have.

i have the club 1000. bit more money, also available on amazon. But i think either would work. I think most thieves would go for a car without the extra hassle of a "club" or something like that. they want quick and easy.
another option is a fuel pump cut off switch. its on this forum. they will get about 500 feet before they run out of gas. had that on my first 4runner with a club.

Another new update:
Checked the truck for play in the ball joints and they are good. Putting in a new steering rack, getting it aligned, and finding a new door and painting to match at the same shop I had the truck painted a year ago. Interior has been deep cleaned and looks like new -- next I'm going to replace a few leather pieces and I'll be selling it. I have one person interested in it as is but I may want to wait until it's really finished aesthetically rides like it did before the theft. It's been a great truck to me but I bought a '99 when my truck was lost and now I'm starting a new build.

I'm using one of these now (in addition to a kill switch and alarm system) on my new truck:

That device has weak point - the attachment to the steering wheel because the steering wheel can be easily sawed. i would consider the one shown in post #40.

Update: I just finished body work and she's looking great. Getting ready to sell, let me know if you have interest -- a few folks have reached out via Insta a while back but wanted to post it here as well. I'll be posting in the Buy / Sell forum when I get paperwork finalized.
