Full mattress in 3rd gen??

So I currently have a twin in the back of my 4runner but need a little more space for me and my GF to sleep a little better when we camp. Im thinking of using a full mattress (75x54) however the wheel arches limit that. I want to create a platform to raise above the arches but even then it only measures 50 inches across the smallest part(where the back seat latches).

I don't camp enough to justify a RTT either. Im more of a once a month 3 day weekend type due to work

I know they make custom fit air-mattresses to fit the arches but I want a platform so I can store things underneath like camping gear/firearm.

Has anyone managed to fit a full into the back of a 3rd gen 4runner with a platform? Id throw one back there to check but don't have access to one myself.

I've fit a full sized mattress topper on the back of my 99 no problem. Sure it wasn't an exact fit but it worked just fine for us.

I just added a lightweight platform for solo camping in my 4th Gen. It may be possible for you to add one more 48" x 16" shelf section to make it wide enough for you guys.

It might need additional support legs to allow for the wieght of two people. 'N stuff...

Have a look:
Convert your 4Runner to a comfy solo camper for about $250

So maybe not quite what you're looking for but here is what I did. I purchase a series of open and closed cell foam as well as memory foam. In the dimensions needed for the 4runner. I used the open and closed cell foam as the base layers and cut them to form around the wheel well. I used enough that it goes up nearly to the top of the wells. Then the memory foam is on top. It makes for a very comfortable sleeping arrangement ( I sleep on foam mattresses at home anyways) without the hassle of air beds and such. We enjoy it enough that we used to just through a sheet on it but have now used cordura and made protective covers with zipper and velcro closures for the upper and lower foam making them official pads. We can wash the covers if needed or replace foam as needed. Don't ask me the combo of foam as I don't recall at this point. But I was lucky enough to have a foam store in my area and the lady pulled all sorts of foams in various thickness's and let us lay on them stack in various ways till we knew what we wanted. Total spent in foam...$90 ( in 2017)

Further more I removed the the cargo cover and used a 2x2 and 1 inch wood rod I believe and 1/2" thick sheet of ply wood and made a "table" using the cargo cover mount areas. So when we sleep our feet are under it but it gives our 45 pound Australian Shepard somewhere to sleep ( just throw a blanket up there for him). Or when we are awake in the morning if it is could out we will make our coffee and eat their. Sometime we use the laptop on it to edit photos we've taken. Now add the truck bed spiderweb net to the interior roof of the 4runner. You've got a place to stash jackets or beanies that aren't wedged in-between seats and such. We also hand our head lamps or a lightweight pattern from it. You can even get a case for your tablet that you can use small carabiners to hang it from the net and watch movies that you've downloaded ( if that is your sort of thing). This setup has worked well for us. I know it is more than you asked for but maybe think about that memory foam situation.

You can search for more specific size mattresses meant for rvs. I built a platform for my land cruiser and went this route. Nice, thick, and has a washable cover. When its just me, I use a tri fold mat that is pretty comfy.

yep, build a simple box that ends up the height of the wheel wells for your matress pad to lay over. Keep in mind the higher you build for storage underneath, the less headspace you have to sit up and crawl around. I used 1/2" thick ply slapped on top of 1x8" pine as a frame and boom, sits level with the tops of the wheel wells. then attached the 4 runner OEM carpet/rug think on top.NO splinters and SO PRO. Like you said, don't go wild if you're just spending 1 weekend a month. Don't worry about tailoring the box around into the nooks of the wheel wells with flaps and lids n junk, you wont even notice plus it gives storage for the right size items like a tall skinny water tank, portable compressor, stuffing a nalgene etc etc. You'll have to decide how to bridge the rear seats to continue a flat spot from your rear cargo box. If you don't have to worry about human passengers on your trips, SO EASY, look up some buildouts for ideas. Unbolt those seats and get a bunch of storage underneath. I had to get creative to work around a third passenger.

Then buy a Full size foam topper, get closer to 6" thick with multiple layers of memory foam that wont let you sink through it. I use river straps to roll it up with the bedding, including pillows, into a burrito and can pack gear around it. You can always trim a slight taper in it so its not hanging out the passenger doors when you open them. you'll know what I mean when you see it. Keep it cheap and experiment.

I'm 6' 1" and make it work with a descent size dog and a short girlfriend. I have my front section seperable from my rear so that i always have the rear cargo storage thing in there. Takes 10 min to convert to camp setup. add a few more min if completely removing seats. seat back storage is also highly recommended.

So here's an update.

My friend was kind enough to let me borrow an old full to see if it would fit and what do you know, fits perfectly. Obviously you need a platform to get over the wheel wells but other than that it fits perfect. What I'm thinking now is going with a topper instead of an actual mattress to save headroom. No drawers with this platform either cause the underside will be for camp chairs/guns.

Hopefully sometime this week I'll be able to go look at some plywood and get this thing going

+1 on no drawers, but I still made a pull out for one side and actually use a trays in the other, way in there, to hold smaller items like straps, tool roll etc that I can pull out and carry around quick. You’re going to want something like that If you put anything down there that can move to the front out of reach. Obviously not your rifles.

That table for my stove doesn’t have to rest on my rack, I used scraps and made an “L” shape that sticks up up in the back and keeps items from sliding off the back. You just have to make sure you don’t pull it too far out, pretty obvious. Basically a big lever that tries to lift up the whole box when it’s pulled out. It literally sits and slides on the carpet. Attach the box to the truck using L brackets that take advantage of the tie down ring’s bolts instead of those silly turn buckles.
