Custom Rear Bumper Fabrication Costs?
I have been on a list for a few months for having a local welder weld together a rear bumper. He specializes in off-road welding so making these bumpers is his nitch. I wanted to get the communities thoughts on what he is charging and whether or not is reasonable pricing.
The work will include welding, painting, and installation. It will take 1.5-2 weeks to complete the job.
- Single swing-out arm with tire mount
- Single 5-gallon jerry can holder
- Two mounting points for D hooks
- Towing receiving hitch
Total cost for supplies: $636
Total cost for labor $45/hr @ 15-20 hrs: $675-$900
Total cost: $1311-$1536
I've seen other similar bumpers that are already fabricated for more expensive, I've seen DIY bumpers that are cheaper, but would require the labor for a welder anyways. Just getting ya'lls thoughts on whether or not this pricing is reasonable or should I continue to keep searching. Thanks

Price seems reasonable to me for a complete, painted, and installed rear bumper as long as the design is something you like.

It's a real bargain specially if he is willing to paint and install it. The guy is going to be out of business if he keeps this up.

Yup, seems way to cheap for a (good quality) custom bumper. Looks like the big issue is the labor cost is too low...
Any details on the design? Tube? Plate? Swing-out details (hinge, latches, etc.)?

Seems very reasonable to me! If you want something for comparison purposes, check out 4xInnovations website. IMO, they have the most reasonable pricing for rear bumpers and swingouts. If you opted for the same options, theirs would be at least that expensive, without paint or installation included.

Agree with the others. Seems a little cheap for a one off production. I'd be leery of poor materials, lack of skill to really get it done well, or a combo of both.
Not saying it will come out bad, but do your research and look at some other examples of his before pulling the trigger.

Updates after the bumper was finished and installed. Total cost was around $1,600 including custom fabrication, painting, and installation. I am 100% satisfied and love the new bumper!

What's the date code on your spare; if it's original, don't dare use it!

That's a really good price considering steel costs right now.
Where are you located? I do the same type of work here in Napa, CA and here it would be $1600-1800 no doubt.
But again region plays a big factor.
Hope you can share some pics. when the work is complete.
Cheers!
Edit: lol missed your last post.
