Question Tightening crankshaft bolt

Hi all

I know that using the special tool and a 250+ft/lb torque wrench is the correct way to reinstall the crank bolt but that's not an option for me.

I've decided to just impact it on with some blue Loctite.

Before I do, I was looking for some advice on what angle roughly to turn it to from snug. Can anyone give me a rough idea, like 120 degrees for example?

My impact does 400ft/lb on second setting. Just looking for ballpark advice.

I tried making my own special tool and wound up cracking the balancer on one of mine like 15 years ago. I've done it 3 times since and I just used an impact. Never had an issue and 2 of those I put another 100k miles on.

That's encouraging thanks

Just scared of overtorquing it because my impact is a beast haha. Will 400ft/lbs get me into trouble if I over do it? I know it's a long shot but if anynone remembers how far it turns that would be a huge help :P

Strip the threads on the crank and you're in a world of hurt yes. Maybe get your hands on a less crazy impact. I think my 30 year old craftsman was rated at 300 foot pounds when new. And I'm still using it! And I wrench for a living.

Yes, that's probably the smart option. Will go get a mid torque and save the high for other stuff.

Cheers

I'm not saying this is the solution to your answer, but you might get to a much safer number by doing something like using extensions. Here is a video of torque test channel trying it out with their guns and showing their results. Best wishes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYavlJY_5Ks

Thanks, I would use extensions or a torque stick if there were more space

@RandyBobandy and I just had to use a 8ft pipe and a camshaft holding tool on the flexplate on a v6 in and engine stand to get a harmonic balancer off.

We actually used the harmonic balancer tool and ripped the homonic balancer center off. So yes you can over tighten the crankshaft pully bolt. Thankfully the threads are good. So it's best to torque these properly.

By looks of it, I need to replace the key in the crankshaft as I can see at some point it slipped hence why it probably was over tightened.. I just wanted to share our experience.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind.

In this case, it has never been off in 17 years and hopefully, will be the only time

I think you probably are on this but be sure to use a brand new crank pulley bolt. The immense amount of torque needed weakens the threads considerably that re-using it is not recommended.

Thanks, yeah I wanted to but called the dealer to order one and he said there is none nationwide and has to order in from Japan which can take 1 to 2 months to get here.

He also said the dealers reuse 99% of them and only replace if damaged. Seems most of them are reused and impacted on from the research I've done on it.

Cheers

It's like a 16mm bolt, it ain't going to strip or break. Just crank it on tight and bump it a couple of times. I do this for a living and have changed about 1000 timing belts. Always have reused crank bolts, never broke or stripped one in 35 years.

I’ve always reused my old bolt. Never a problem.
