Broke down today ?

Noticed temp was a little high then moved into the red immediately pulled over and shut off. Sat for a while and tried to start, crank no start. A/T light on too. Oil is clean and full, no water or steam spewing. Really bummed and wonder what the hell happened. Had it towed to buddies ship and hoping for good news in the am. Could it just be water pump is my only thought ?

Hard to say. Overheating on these engine isn't very common unless it blew a head gasket. How many miles?

If the head gasket blew, your coolant might have flowed into the engine and burned off and the radiator then becomes empty and the engine could have seized up. Once the gauge hits the red your engine is at around 250 degrees, which at that temperature nothing good happens. I have a feeling your buddy will tell you the coolant was gone.

Mine overheated like that a couple of years ago and it was because of a rusted rear heater core line which was busted and leaked all the coolant. The mechanic at the time said I was lucky to have not blown a head gasket because of running it very hot. This could be your problem if you live in the saltbelt. Good luck with it and hope it isn't the head gasket!

Well it started and runs no problem. Looks like it was either the radiator or water pump and initially no other problems. Going for all new parts including timing belt. Oh also drain and fill the oil and transmission fluid. Fingers crossed

So big thumbs up for transmission cooler saved me from a pink milkshake. The whole bottom of the radiator was rusted out, which was strange because it’s only 10 years old and water pump fried. Up late last night doing the timing belt and accessory‘s back on the road today can’t tell you how relieved I am.

It could have been much worse! Hopefully you didn't cause any engine damage with the high temps.

Taking any Toyota to H is never a good thing. Luckily it wasn't over H and just touching the H. As getting the engine too hot is mostly when the Head gaskets can blow and the heads warp. Aluminum isn't as forgiving as cast iron can be with heat. Thankfully, Our blocks are cast iron and that is a very good thing when it comes to hotter temperatures. Your extremely lucky you saw it when you did.
