I can shift into N with truck off?

So I am working on the truck and I wanted to put it in Neutral but the battery is dead because it has been sitting for a while. Well I get in the driver's seat and just try and it allows me to put the truck in Neutral with a dead battery and no key in the ignition. My truck is a 96 automatic transmission. I shouldn't be able to do this right? And what could be causing it?

Shouldn’t be able to do it unless you are pressing the little switch on the shifter under the little black cover piece.. That’s how they shift your vehicle into neutral when you get towed.

Sometimes people take the shift lock solenoid off the shifter mechanism... there is a small chance that a PO did that to your truck.

There's no issue with being able to shift in N with the engine off. The shift lock tab or solenoid mentioned above is busted. That's the little "click" you hear when you press on the brake to shift out of Park to Drive when the car is running. You might want to get it fixed as I believe it also controls if you can shift into Park when the vehicle is moving.

I know that there's a solenoid under the dash near the ignition that isn't connected. I connected it when I discovered it after buying the truck and my key wouldn't come out I think so I just disconnected it again haha could that be it? Or a completely different solenoid?

The little solenoid with the small plunger? They get stuck sometimes and prevent you from being able to remove the key. I just took mine off once it started sticking

You can always put the transfer case in neutral.
