Clock spring?

Hi all,

After a few months without issue here's the new one: my horn stopped working, and the annual MOT is coming up.
  • Tested the cruise control: won't work (but I never used it in 3 years so...)
  • Hazard lights work
  • Fuse is fine

Didn't know how to do:
- test the ground or the horns on the battery
- test the ECU
- open the steering wheel and test the switch

I wonder if that's enough diagnostic at this point, but I've read the clock spring might be the culprit with these symptoms, does that seem correct?

Now, as usual getting parts to the UK for the good ol' Runner is a bit tricky, so I'm trying to find the right part number for the clock spring, as it seems the airbag connector is different pre and post 96. My car is a 96 Limited auto, and all the 84306-35010 or 84306-35011 I find on eBay seem to have the post-96 airbag connector, is that wrong? What would be the proper part?

note: I couldn't find a good exhaustive part catalog as PDF to print and keep at home, if anyone has a good link...

Thanks!

Thanks!
ToyoDIY.com Make an account to see the pictures.

Since the specifics of the Hilux Surf vs. 4Runner, etc. are a bit fuzzy to history, you'll want to start there, I think. You can likely find compatible parts on other similar year Toyotas if you know what you are looking for.

Thanks! It confirms I need a 84306-35010 for my car... however both types of airbag connectors seem to come up with that same code (could be an oversight from the sellers?) so I'd like to make sure and get the right thing.

Among everyone who had to deal with that issue (seems like a lot), would you have pictures of the airbag connectors (pre and post 96') you could share here?

Diagnostic-wise, what do you guys think? Should I perform any of the additional steps mentioned above? (unfortunately couldn't find a tech write up about that on ToyoDIY)

(for reference: talking about that topic How to install a Clock Spring a.k.a. Spiral Cable.)

and here's the issue: 84306-35010 parts all seem to have the 98' airbag clip (right) instead of the 96' (left), hence probably not compatible with my car

edit: looks like there might be a type A and type B for the same part code?

i replaced my steering wheel with one from a 96 and when i did i had to replace the clock spring or it wouldn't work. I can tell you they're different, but i didn't take any pictures unfortunately

Thanks, yes I think I can confirm this type A / B thing for the airbag clip, now I need to find a place that sells the type A and ships it to the UK. I probably should open my steering wheel and check it's type A indeed (never know if the previous owner might have changed it in the first 17 years of the car's life).

Any link to a reliable seller would be awesome, thanks in advance! :-)

Thanks, tried a search there before, unfortunately they only have 1 part available among the 3 possible, and it's a type B (also, expensive)
