98 5speed code P0500

I have a 98 T4R manual 4x4 with abs codes 31 33 34 49 and a check engine light that returned code p0500. Speedometer it intermittently not working. Attached are pictures of the scanner. I’ve already cleaned the three wheel speed sensors and still nothing. Please advise next steps.

Do you have access to a spare abs ecu you could try? The wheel speed sensors aren’t going to fail all at once like that, I’d go to the junkyard and pull an abs ecu and try that

49 is for the brake light circuit. Check brake lights including the third.
p0500 has been fixed in the past by replacing the abs ecu. which is located. by the driver'side under the dash.

I had the third light out. I’ve replaced it, abs light is still on. All lights function normally with the right turn signal blinking fast. Do you have a picture of the abs ecu?

No that’s not it, it’s under the passenger side panel just in front of the door, very easy to get to

I swapped the ABS ecu with one from a 2000 automatic. At fist the abs light was off but the check engine light was still on and Speedo non functional. Second time starting the car the abs light was back on. This time with codes 31 32 33 34 and 41. I want to swap the vss next. Would it be the same part from a 2000 automatic as a 98 manual? What are the one part numbers for each? I found 15 different ones that all look different online.

Pretty sure that the ABS didn't operate the speedo until 99 or 00 when the integral ABS master cylinder came out. Check output speed sensor on the transfer case.

Smile

All 4runners with abs have the speedometer controlled by the wheel speed sensor, there will be no sensor on the transfer case just a plug where a speed sensor would be if the vehicle didn’t have abs.

It sounds like the abs ecu is not getting a signal from the wheel speed sensors, I don’t think they would all go bad at once like that so I’d be looking at the wiring going to the abs ecu.

The abs ecu must be getting no signal at all because the speedometer will run with only two wheel speed sensors connected, I ran like this on my 97 before wiring in a transmission speed sensor

Integrated abs master cylinder was for 2001/2002. All ABS 3rd gen 4Runners use the rear wheel speed sensors for vehicle speed.

EDIT: Non-ABS 3rd gen 4Runner's use a output speed sensor on the transfer case.

I don’t have anything on my t case. I picked up a speed sensor from autozone and I can’t find anything on this car that it would go to. Swapping abs ecu didn’t fix it. Cleaning all wheel sensors didn’t fix it. What’s next?

Did the abs ecu you swapped come from a 98? Was it the same part number as the original?

I swapped tried two different abs ecu. One from a 2000 with the same part number and one I found on eBay for $25 that was supposed to be from a 98.
