High idle on cold starts on cold days

My 3.4L with 5-speed has recently developed a really high idle on cold starts on cold days (<65). When I start it it immediately goes up to about 1800 rpm and slowly climbs to about 2100 rpm. After I drive it for a couple minutes it drops down to a more normal idle. On warm morning (65+) it idles fine on start up. I'm guessing this is related to the IAC but I was wondering if anyone has experienced this and found a different solution.

A vacuum leak would be my first guess.

Likely not a vacuum leak then. I would be leaning more towards a problem with your IAC. It could just be dirty if you've never cleaned it.

R U sure it's not normal? My v6 5speed high idles when weather is cold and kicks down to normal once warm. I noticed today my idle was around 1500 on startup and temp in Tucson is around 70. Unless ur vehicle idle starts acting erratic I wouldn't worry about it.

@texadelphia Yeah, I idle at about 1200-1500 on a cold start until I warm up a bit and settle down to about 750, especially if it's not very hot outside. I should clarify it's a smooth 1200-1500, it's not rough. If it's smooth, and consistent, then maybe it's normal? Or at least OK? But that climb to 2100 sounds strange. I like @Bad Luck 's IAC idea. Make sure to position the IAC cavities upside down when spraying the TB cleaner. This is to allow the gunk to drain out instead of collecting/pooling inside there.

Yeah, 1500 would seem normal to me. But 2000 seems excessively high to me and it didn't do that at all last winter.

MikeM

Mine is the same. My saturn does it too.

For my 3.4 I can tell the instant it goes closed loop. It’s when it starts dropping the idle.
