3rz-fe Steel header upgrade questions (with part numbers)

I am getting ready to order my parts from Camelback Toyota for the mini header upgrade since my cast manifold has a crack in it.

The following part numbers are directly from the Timmy video on the subject, so credit to Jordan for making this list that I simply transcribed, updated, or clarified:

Entry |PN | Desc | Quantity (PN update if needed)
1. | 17141-75080 | manifold | 1
2. | 17173-75020 | exhaust gasket m engine | 1
3. | 90917-06061 | exhaust gasket p | 2
4. | 90116-10149 | bolt stud | 3
5. | 90179-10070 | nut a | 3 (Updated PN 90080-17187)
6. | 90179-10175 | nut b | 6
7. | 90126-08001 | hex lobular stud | 2
8. | 90179-08059 | nut c | 2
9. | 25634-75010 | egr gasket pipe | 1
10.|17167-75100 | exhaust heat shield | 1
11.|90105-08084 | bolt washer base | 2
12.|90430-24003 | gasket | 1

There might be more updated PN, I just included the one I remembered to check when I made this table. Also I didn't include the exhaust pipe clamp (PN 90461-32008) because I want to save money, and mine is still working fine and wont cause catastrophic damage if it fails.

The list doesn't include part numbers for the bolts and nuts that hold the heat shield on. I don't have any definitive information on what bolts work.

Another thing about this list is that for items 5, 6 and 8, I designated them with suffix a, b, and c. These designations are not from Toyota, I added them so I can differentiate them without using a part number.

Nut B is what holds the manifold to the engine, seen at this part of the video. There are 6 of them.

Now that is cleared up, onto my questions... a lot of them have to do with the fact that Toyota doesn't give clear descriptions for what each nut goes to

The first has to do with the different nuts. What does nut A and C fasten to?

Where does item 11 on my list go to?

Do any of these parts change between CA emissions vehicles and 49 state vehicles?

Also I looked into finding the nuts and bolts that hold the new heat shield on. I looked up a diagram on partsouq for a Tacoma that uses the same exhaust manifold, there are multiple part numbers for these nuts and bolts.

There is 90119-06894 and 90119-06399 for the heat shield bolts, and 90179-06257 for the heat shield nut. All 3 of those part numbers bring up results for engine related diagrams. Does anyone know if they are the correct ones for the heatshield?

I just did this job 6mo ago and had a lot of the same head scratching you're doing right now with nuts/bolts/studs. I called multiple local Toyota parts departments and got some conflicting info than the video (but the video was a HUGE help, thanks Timmy & Jordan!). I created this doc to keep organized: 1997 4Runner 3RZ-FE - Exhaust Manifold Swap for Tacoma mini header - Google Docs The doc is the easiest source for what I purchased, but I also attached a screenshot of the parts I ordered.

Nut A = Exhaust Manifold to Exhaust Pipe
Nut C = Exhaust Manifold to EGR

Heat shield bolt, see doc above for heat shield nuts which you also need two of, and heat shield itself.

I have a CA emissions vehicle and I ordered all the parts in my doc and got the right ones.

Thats super helpful.

I was going to ask a question about CA spec vs federal emissions vehicles (like mine), but I came to a realization about these manifolds and have a theory about why Toyota made two designs for an engine that was likely going to be discontinued.

There are 2 manifold designs on 3rz 4runners. The first manifold has a part number ending with 5030. This manifold is the cast iron manifold that cracks, and its the one on my 4runner. This manifold, from what I've seen looking through Toyota parts websites, was the only manifold design from 1996-1998.

This changed in 1999, when Toyota (either to allow 3rz 4runners to be sold in CA or to continue selling them) introduced the metal manifold with part number 5080. This new manifold only shows up when I have a 1999 or 2000 4runner. This is also the very manifold I am trying to swap into my 4runner.

You can see this change for yourself, here is the exhaust section for a 1998, and here is one for a 1999

But what is note worthy is that for these 2 model years there were 2 manifolds you could get on the 3rz 4runner. The older 5030 cast iron manifold and the improved 5080 manifold. Only the 5080 manifold has the CA spec/low emission designation.

I would be interested to know if there are any 4runners with the 5030 cast iron manifold that have the CA compliant designation. Despite my 4runner passing CA smog, it is not a CA spec 4runner. I think this also means I should always purchase parts for CA 4runners when doing this mod, sense the manifold design I want to swap in might be exclusive to CA 4runners.

Your truck passes the fed standards, not the CA standards - and it is tested as such... even in California. They have different (probably only slightly) standards between CA and Fed emissions vehicles.

Went to toyota today

Went into my dealership today and got some more part numbers. Some match ones provided, others dont. At this point its obvious that there are multiple part numbers that will hopefully work. All these tiny differences have to do with inexpensive parts anyway.

I'm only going to list the numbers for studs, bolts, nuts. All the big items match.

90179-08015 | Nut (heat shield) | 2 (old PN 90179-08041)
90105-08084 | bolt washer based| 2
90116-06028 | bolt, stud | 2 (Don't buy, didn't fit)
90179-10175 | nut | 6
90116-10149 | bolt stud| 3
90116-10163 | bolt stud | 6

One interesting thing is in the doc by chapolito, Toyota stevens creek uses part number 90179-10128 in place of 90179-10175 from the timmy video. My dealership used the 90179-10175, so it seems like there are some duplicate part numbers that should work.

The list includes the studs too, I think I can reuse the ones that go into the engine. I also Have a diagram where all these parts go which I'll post.

I got all my parts today, only 2 mistakes. The first is that I forgot to order an EGR gasket, oh well I'll buy it from my local dealership.

The 2nd mistake was ordering 90116-06028. I believe this is the manifold stud, but it doesn't seem to have enough diameter (save the jokes).

I need to order the EGR gasket, studs, and nuts that keep it tight against the EGR pipe.
