Trans oil levels with modified cooling

*****EDIT******* I had it backwards. The fluid registers correctly when Hot, but is way above the Hot line when the truck is actually Cold.

Extra cooling via a Tru-cool in series, extra hose loop, Magnefine etc.

The fluid expands when it warms up which is why it reads higher when hot. The added plumbing has added fluid capacity, but it hasn't changed where you want the dipstick to read. The FSM is pretty clear that the cold reading is to get you into the right ballpark when refilling, but the hot reading is the one you want to actually use to make sure you have the right amount of fluid.

When you measure the fluid level on the dipstick you're measuring what's in the pan not the whole system.

After installing an external cooler continue to measure the same way as before.

The cold level is just to get you in the right ballpark.
It should not be used to determine if you have the correct amount of fluid.

OK, thanks all. I may have added a little more than I should have after doing all the plumbing. After installing the cooler I've run it harder than ever before - some Rubicon trail, some Mojave desert, mountains, etc. Hope I haven't done any damage....

Trans oil levels with modified cooling

At the end of a 10+ mile drive, drain the atf and add 1 gallon.

Start it up run it through the gears and put back in park with engine running check your level.

I donít even pull the dip stick anymore.

Oops - just clarifying my mistake so future searchers don't get the wrong idea.

The cold level is to get it in the ballpark in order to run the transmission to get hot without damaging it. A high cold level with the engine running is not a problem.
