ABS Brake Booster and Accumulator Pump

Me and my cousin who owns a 01 Montero was trying to fix the ABS booster in his truck.

We did our research and our own investigation. I am also in ih8mud.com and owns a LC 100 which also has the same brake booster setup. From my understanding with fellow mudders in the forum, I found out the followings:

1) If the ABS booster motor runs more than 30 seconds at the initial engine startup, and frequent run of the ABS motor (say once every 2-3 minute), it is most likely the accumulator is bad and need replacement.
- My cousin noticed this symptom and thought air is in the brakes. He bled the system several times. We noticed not much fluid comes out from the front wheels.
- He continue to run for months this way and ended up all the dash warning lights and never ending warning alarm!

2) Got the ABS motor rebuild, and went to bleed the brakes, still the same situation.. motor runs continuously.

3) Decided to replace the Accumulator with a new OEM unit, not so expensive $150 (a video on youtube showed the same issue). Bled the brakes ONLY at the pump (Nipples at the wheels are frozen so no chance to get wheels bled). A youtube video done by a person in East Europe explains how to bleed the brakes at the master pump (no fancy electronics). It was simple than I initially thought.

4) We are pleased to say the brakes are back to normal. We know the truck still NEEDS the wheels to be bled.

Just wanted to inform fellow members that ABS brake booster is NOT as bad as we think.

Feel free to contribute to this thread.

I find Toyota ABS Booster units have more than 3 times the life of other car makers. My 2000 LC at 240K miles still stops the ABS motor at 29-30 seconds! However, my Cousins Montero at 120K miles gave all this trouble. Sadly I found a very good condition 02 Montero at a junk yard in Shreveport simply because of a failing accumulator, $150 value and super easy to fix.

Here is the title of the video of the Eastern European guy: Toyota Land Cruiser Prado ABS actuator replacement blinding testing.

There's a guy named Andy Le in the UZJ100 group on Facebook that rebuilds these units. I plan to pick up a used core at some point and send it out to him for rebuild. It a heck of a lot cheaper than a new OEM one, and a lot more peace of mind than a junkyard one of unknown condition. He has been doing this since at least 2015 when I got my 100 series and started following the group on Facebook. I asked him about doing the 4Runners, and he said it would be no problem.
