Falken Wildpeak AT3 - Air Down PSI for Snow/Washboard?

Hey all,

I have a new set of Falken Wildpeak AT3's on my 3rd gen 4runner, currently with the 16" alloy 5-star stock rims.
  • What PSI should I run in snow?
  • What about washboard (25-30mph)?
  • Lowest/safest PSI?
  • Daily driving PSI?

Thanks all,

  • What PSI should I run in snow? 15-20 psi
  • What about washboard (25-30mph)? 15-20 PSI
  • Lowest/safest PSI? 12-14 PSI depending on actual tire size and wheel width. Wider tire on a narrow rim is more likely to lose the bead.
  • Daily driving PSI? - Look up the "Chalk Test" - no other way to know.

I don't know where you got that from but wider tires on narrow wheels are much less likely to lose a bead. Rock crawlers have been using that combo below 10 psi for decades without an issue.

285's on a 7.5 inch rim are definitely a concern for losing the bead at 12-14 PSI. I have personally witnessed a few debeadings on stock wheels with that size. I have no issues on the same wheels with 265 vs 285's.

I get what you are saying about rock-crawlers. Ideally the width of the rim is within an inch of 2 of the tire, and yes, the rim does benefit from being slightly narrower, but there's a break even point for that.

To clarify stock 5 star wheels are a 7 inch wide wheel. The closer the wheel width to the tire width the more likely you are to lose the bead. That's been my experience and observation. Sidewall height also plays a role in the bead retention.

Well the tire size is 285/75/R16.
Wheel size is.. sounds like 7in.

I should be good for the recommendations Shadow provided?

I have personally witnessed that going down to 20 psi helps make washboard feel smoother. I have no experience airing down on snow/ice, however.

Thanks all,
I have the 17"*7" stock sr5 rim on 285/70/17s. On the trail I don't go lower than 15 pounds never had a bead problem, not even close. In the snow my usual because I go hardcore through it and enjoy the danger factor. Normal road conditions depends on your driving style around corners. I like to go hard with my wheel spacers wide stance. So you'll be paying attention to sidewall stiffness/roll around corners and adjust to liking. For me this is 42 pounds.
