Underbody paint color? 2002 SR5 (Black)

Hi,

I'm looking for a paint code number (or any reference) to the underbody paint for a 2002 SR5. Body color is black. It appears as some shade of gray? It may be common to all 2002 4Runners but I don't have anything to compare to.

The lighter color in the photo below (from my truck):

I've searched the site for info on this but can't seem to find it. I've also gone through the big paint sites but they all only seem to list primary body colors. Not underbody.

I'm doing some touchup and I'd prefer to use the same color if I can get it!

Thanks in advance -

Boy this is a tougher search than I thought!

I have tried all combinations of words in the Google-sphere but no love on finding the interior body paint color for 3rd Gens. It's possible it's different based on the exterior color but the gray/green/cream feels like it would be the base for all (for all I know).

If anyone has some direction on this for me to point at, let me know! Thanks in advance..

My guess is that there might not be a color code for the primer. Is there any small piece you could unbolt and take to get color-matched?

I bet you're the first person to try to color match the underside of the body pan.

Best of luck!

EDIT: FWIW, I went with black: https://www.toyota-4runner.org/3653353-post33.html

You are right, it's likely primer color with some topcoat (unless single stage?).. I can try that in my search too..

Your truck looks great! I'm not quite ready to go full POR on the underbody but that looks well protected for sure..

It's going to be tough to find a paint-matched primer for that.

I ended up color matching mine Mil. Silver

Super clean WeakSauz. Very nice. I can't tell if you spot painted it b/c it is so uniform.

So - you took a paint chip and had custom paint made to match it? Was that at a local shop or through mail order?

My challenge will be to get a paint sample. Truck is out of commission at the moment.

Thanks!

Hey Jason-
I just went to my local NAPA Auto Parts store, which has a paint division within it. They were able to mix up rattle cans with the OEM silver color (by paint code).

I'm not sure that they would be able to do this for a primer color, though. Primer is sort of a tough one. You may be able to buy a couple of primers and see what's closest?

Thanks WeakSauz. I may just have to do the shotgun approach at the end of it all. Surprised that this info isn't more readily available with the number of trucks out there.

I'm trying to decide whether it is truly primer, or just "primer color". Toyota must have put a protecting layer over it - so it could be primer + clear coat. But it feels to me like a some sort of generic bland paint color they used for under body. I've seen other underbody shots from other trucks and it looks similar. For example (not my trucks):

and

I'll keep looking and will post if I find something reasonably close. It may have to wait till the truck can move and then I can bring it to a body shop where they can use the spectrophotometer to interpret it.

It's just Toyota paint. Nothing fancy. So scuff it and use whatever paint you think will work. Most just use a flat black as it's under the vehicle. Some use a gloss black . The choice is yours. The body panels are just dipped in the anti corrosive paint and mostly have some over spray of the chassis color on them.

When I clean and paint I just use a decent paint to keep it from rusting. Being in the rust belt, it's a constant struggle.

Thanks Brillo, I'll likely end up with something that is close enough because it doesn't really matter being under the truck.. I'd buy matching paint if I find it..

BTW - I've read your entire fixing rust post (24 pages) a couple of times already as I build my plan for internal frame protection. My truck frame has good parts and bad parts - it's all a journey. Thanks for putting so much info up there, it really helps.

Yes keeping the inside of the frame clean and rust inhibitors liquids insides keeps it from rust from forming. Lots of people disagree with me on sealing the frame up. However, that depends on your environment. Around my area its better so seal it up as you not going to make it air tight. It just seals out the salt water from working on the inside of the frame. :-(

Inside frames I use fluids to help coat the steel. On the outside I think I am going to Cosmoline over the paint to try to keep the steel from rusting.
