Have you looked at the ECT sensors temp in live data? It is easy to tell if it’s bad or not.

Let it sit overnight and compare the IAT and ECT sensors to your ambient temp. When it’s warmed up use a temp gun.

So this did NOT actually fix it. Unclear why I got a couple of warms starts out of it initially, but it is as before now.

Back to the drawing board.

Of you do change the coolant temp sensor - I can’t see the pic me mentioned - but it’s between the banks in the front behind the timing below cover. Yes, five crush washers, once for the sensor and four for the fuel rail banjo bolt you’ll need to remove for access.

How do I view live data? I have a basic code reader only. Specialized tools, presumably.

My latest thoughts are the throttle body (control…? It’s been cleaned 2x now) and the upstream air/fuel/O2 sensor. It has thrown a p0171 code once or twice.

Post script for anyone who runs into a similar problem—it was the fuel pump.

It's pretty easy actually. Just order a Bluetooth OBD dongle online, and you can hook your phone up to it and view all sorts of data that you can't see on your average OBD scanner. Dongles are about $10-15 and it's pretty cool to be able to see all your vehicle data. Some people also recommend getting an on/off switch for the dongle since they typically have LEDs on them and can drain your battery if you don't drive it for a week, but that's more a preference thing (I do have the on/off switch for peace of mind). Switch should be around $5.
