Back-Up Light Switch?

2002 4Runner - Automatic Transmission. Reverse Lights stopped working recently and I am guessing that its probably the back-up light switch. After doing a ton of research online, I think that the Automatics don't have a dedicated back-up light switch and actually use the Neutral Safety Switch to activate the reverse lights. Am I correct in thinking this? I have also been having some intermittent issues with the truck not starting (not turning over) in Park so that would lead me to believe that the switch is bad and that's the issue. Can anyone confirm?

I’d get a junkyard switch for a few dollars and see if it makes a difference

Can't confirm that the 2002 is the same, but the wiring diagram for my 2000 shows the automatic transmission does use the neutral safety switch for the backup lights.

There is no dedicated switch for reverse lights. If thé fuse is good. The PNP can be taken apart and cleaned or a junkyard, eBay PNP.
