Yup the solonoid of the vsv valve by the charcoal canister, opening and closing regulating the vacuum to the intake manifold is what the noise is. In other models this valve is covered or in a spot to reduce the sound.

V6 making new noises, ticking and shrieking sometimes

So mine only ticks once the engine is warm. Something to do with open vs closed loop?

I think at first startup the fan is loud so you can't hear it as much but once it settles at idle reaching operating temp. It's easier to hear.
