Is it a US govt reqt that you go thru an importer? I read in the ST205 FB group that in the UK, the buyers can deal directly with the seller in Japan and make the shipping arrangements themselves. Well.. at least that's how I understand their posts
|
Nope you can do everything yourself. It really comes down to how much risk your willing to take. Did you want customs to crush your purchase at the docks because you missing a detail?
If your interested I would suggest Jdm Importer | United States | The Import Guys I did use them for a bit and they are legit. They just don’t have boots on the ground in Japan. I’m using right hand drive out of Canada. They have an office in Tokyo so they have been sending me local picts as well. You can import a 15 year old truck into Canada. Unlike the US where it’s 25 years. This way you can import newer month/year trucks and store them in Canada. Storage in Japan is very expensive.
Anyways the import guys have a nice faq and give you a breakdown of all the costs. IMO the 1000$ they charge for bidding, shipping, import docs and overall logistics is worth it.

It looks about as perfect as anything can be for that age. Hoping it works out for you!

Thanks it's going to be hard to wait for it. I will do a build thread here, I know IH8MUD Forum is the LC hangout but I will always be a 3rd gen'er @ heart.
manufacture date is 11/97 so I can't legally import it until Nov of this year. I will have to pay for storage in Canada until the time comes. I will also have to pay duty on it.
Last I heard it was in Tokyo and should get a shipping spot this next week. For the love of god please don't have this ship catch on fire, please.
I know somebody who does international shipping and tracking so I will see if he can get us real time updates as to it's progress. I would guess it will not be in Halifax until maybe June?

I went through all of the pics. That truck is in immaculate shape for the age. I didn't see rust either. Interior is in great shape, sunroof. That's a score!

That's awesome. Can't wait to see the build.
I sat in a brand new 79 the other day. ALL the want. I fully intend to import a 2007 or 2008 79 as soon as I legally can.
Out of curiosity, how many LHD 70 series did you see during your search?

I think it depends on how long you are willing to search. Left hand drives exist but they are only from Spain, switzerland, africa, Middle East, Central America is your best bet for LHD. Who knows you could find one right away or it might take 2 years.
I only was able to locate a couple and they were all 75’s and troupies. You need to be super careful because the only reason people sell them is because they are rusted out Or beat to hell. Or have very high mileage. It’s also hard to float 30k out to unknown locations.
Generally like this one, not the correct year but you will get the idea
1985 Toyota Land Cruiser HJ75 Pickup #1010
I was after a very specific model. Hzj77hv Jdm only not sold elsewhere.

Thanks. Yeah that makes sense. I hate the idea of buying beat up old truck for $30k but I’m probably a little more open to wear and tear than you (and probably most people) likely were. But hard pass on rust.
Definitely won’t be the smartest financial decision I ever make, but shit, you only have so many days on the planet

Honestly though I want a 2007+ for the coil spring front end and facelift anyway, so I have a few more years to not save any money.

Have passed the Duplicate De-Registration Certificate process
I will reserve my excitement but this is a big step it can now leave Japan, YES!
I was also able to get some better pics from the agents. There is some rust, yes I figured as much, most of these trucks @ 25 years or older do have some rust but hopefully it's not too bad and I can remediate once I have it. I hate rust. you can see the rust pretty good on the last image in the imgur post, the close up by the tag.
anybody knowing about axle codes? K085 seems to be 9.5 4.111 heavy duty full floating LSD I believe.

The only thing special I noticed is that the truck has a 24V electrical system...
The rust seems minimal/non-existent by rust belt standards. I wouldn't even fear that by California standards. There is some visible rust there on the front bumper fasteners, but everything underneath seems clean.
