My base model came with the small black flares with the chrome outline. The back side of the flares have a groove which a unique clip snaps into, the other side of the clip has a square hole that another plastic clip goes through to hold it in place to the inside of the wheel well. The advantage of this is that no drilling is required.
But these flares are the hardest to find, and I cant even find a photo of the clip they use. From experience they serve no functional purpose. Most people seem to remove them.
Finding the correct front mud guards for a 4runner without running boards or fender flares was not difficult at all. My dealership still sold them, and they went on without any drilling.

The smallest "chrome trim" not-quite-flares were for legal reasons - the tires need to be 'inside' the body of the vehicle. The 16" wheels are outside of the body without those little strips.
If your truck started with those little chrome strips, it should be drill-free install. If you started with a non-flare 15" wheel truck, you need to drill the rear for the 'skinny black' flares. If you do a good job with the drilling and install, they will look 100% factory.

Your forerunner is identical to how I want mine to look, color, stance, everything. And this one is the base model so it came with absolutely nothing. Do you know if the ones that came with the flares from the factory have grommets in the rear wheel well, or are they just drilled into the metal? I guess I'm not too opposed to drilling in the wheel well since nobody will ever see it.

There's nothing special about the rear holes. They are in the return lip inside the wheel well. You can see a few of them in the second picture. The flares should come with fender washers/nuts and rubber pads for each location. The clips for the rear doors also use a little pad of paint protection film (thick sticker) - they have little teeth that hold on to the doors!
I added the rubber trim that is used on the Tacoma flares to clean up the look of mine.

This will probably be my last question in this thread so I don't become a pain in the ass.
Do those SR5 flares come with a rubber seal from the factory? All the ones I have seen for sale online don't seem to have a rubber gasket, or "flare pad".
Also, when looking at the parts diagram online, it shows there are like four different style clips that hold on the rear flare and they all have different part numbers. I'm assuming those aren't necessary to install them?

I also could use the PN (if you're talking about the gasket things). I might actually put my trim back on if I had those. Seems like a hassle to try and DIY.

I have a set of SR5 flares en-route to install on a silver-rimmed base model. I will photo document.
I could use the PNs if you had them handy
@ phattyduck
otherwise I can look them up

The receipt from that purchase doesn't have a PN. I'm pretty sure it is 75696-35020...

Looking forward to those pictures. When you get the flares, can you tell me if they already have a rubber gasket installed? Also where did you find them, and is the seller sending the hardware as well?

Need 4 of those, or 5?
They appear to be 47" long each... Is one long enough for each wheel?

I bought 5 just to be safe... I do remember having lots leftover though. Too lazy to walk out to the garage to check to see if I can find the leftover bits though.

Did you do the door stickers under or nah because of the liner?

I did put protection film under the clips on the doors. I used stuff meant to protect door edges from paint chips (like 1" wide in a roll, in the 'rice' section of the auto parts store)
I originally installed them without the trim, like factory, but wanted to clean them and get them looking nice. When I re-installed them I put on the trim between the outside edges of the flares and paint.
Sounds like I need to take some more detailed photos...
