soaking your IAC in purple power

hey ya'll, dumbass again

i got a "new" iac valve because mine is taking a shit (stall at idle) and managed to get a "new" one from the pic-a-part here in town. it was REALLY dirty, coolant lines were gunked up and had lots of carbon, so i figured for $12 i'd give it a shot and clean the li'l fella. my best idea to clean it was to just let it sit in some purple power for a bit and then go to town with some brass wire brushes. i did one pass through and it looks mighty clean so far. just need some brass wire brushes for the coolant lines.

what ya'll think? am i just dooming myself or am i a genius? what can and cannot be cleansed by the power of purple? i look forward to your wisdom t4r <3

For $12 I’d give it a shot

The same thing that caused yours to "fail" full of soot and carbon, is very likely an issue with a junkyard IAC.

You should plan to replace the molded gasket anytime you remove the IAC because it is delicate and it swells once exposed to fuel and oil. The other thing to check are the water lines that allow the coolant to pass through; if those are buggered the system fails to perform as designed, too.

I tried as you and ended up replacing the IAC, gasket and both hoses to cure my idle issue.

I think an equally good question is: when is the last time you cleaned the MAF sensor, air filter, intake plumbing and throttle body?

Purple power will mess with the vast majority of finished surfaces including car paint - it'll even eat through anodizing. I think with some types of aluminum like 7075 it will discolor and stain it, but that's largely unrelated here. That's really the only danger with it. I see very little reason to avoid using it under the hood, I arguably use Purple Power more than anything myself
And worst case scenario, you're out $12

I did all of this cleaning about a year ago when I did the valve cover gaskets, which I also need to re-do.

Purple Power will eat aluminum if you leave it on too long it's pretty harsh. The FSM says don't even bother cleaning or messing with the IAC but I've cleaned mine with q-tips and WD40 before. Or maybe it was 90% isopropyl I can't remember. Actually I probably used throttle body cleaner now I think about it.
