No For Sale Sign!!
So twice last year and once so far this year, someone randomly rings my house doorbell to ask, "How much for the 4Runner?"! Wife has gotten tired of it and told the last guy, "It doesn't have a For Sale sign on it!".
Anyone else having that happen lately? Not sure if this is from covid causing vehicle shortages or just strong desirability to have one/sell one.
I have 4 vehicles, so end up leaving one on the street, up to now its been the Runner but maybe I should move it to driveway closer to house?
Thoughts?

I can’t help you with your question…. I ended up with my highlander because it had the hood up at work and the guy was over it. I casually chatted with him about it since I was there to pick something up. He wasn’t a mechanic by any stretch. He was also tired of “throwing” money at it.
He opened the door by saying he was thinking about selling it because it a money pit. I told him whenever that happens let me know. Call came 2 weeks later.
Less than a 10 dollar gasket, plugs, and a service I was rolling in an e locked SX model, and his money pit was gone. Everyone wins.
In your case. Maybe answer the door with $35k. Any thing less than them opening a envelope full of cash deserves a slammed door. More than likely you getting sought out by someone, and their using their buddies to help since the got shot down.
Maybe answer the door with a shotgun in hand? I dunno. 90’s Japanese stuff is hot right now.

Just put a for sale sign on it for 125,000.00. Then they wont have to ask and likely they will never knock on your door.
10% commission to me if you sell it.

I had someone what to buy my parts mobile with an extremely rotted frame before.
Everytime we have a yard sale people want to buy my imperal jade 2001 sport which is not for sale.
I could see if it's sitting in weeds etc. Being that you can't buy alit of new vehicles right now the issue is getting worse.
I wonder if I can sale my rotted frame silver one for 3k to 5k cash.. That will save me from having to redo it down the road...;)

Maybe 2 or 3 times over the past year or two. Not coming up to my door, thats a little weird, just in conversation. One of which was from a guy I know flips toyotas in his spare time which I find particularly insulting, knowing he just wanted to make a buck off it. Before my buddy's XJ died he got offers ALL the time, practically any time he was at a gas station. People are weird as hell these days

Maybe you keep it too clean looking like you're selling. Never happened to me but mine is always filthy. I clean the windows and lights sometimes and wash the undercarriage.

If you don't ask, the answer is "no"! I tell my kids that anyway.
I wouldn't knock on the door unless I am very confident it is unused. I've never done that, FYI.
There are two such vehicles in my neighborhood like that. When it hasn't moved in literally years, doesn't hurt to ask. Still building my courage up tho.

I've had a few notes left over the years. I'm also guilty of doing it once and came very close to purchasing the car.

The other day I alllllmost left a note on a MINT mid-90s Saab 900 turbo convertible (dark green with tan leather and top) in my local mechanic's yard. He said it's a one-owner car, and she's 90 years old! She drives it gently, keeps it garaged, and he's serviced it for years. In fact... maybe I should follow up on that... LOL

I've had a couple notes which don't bother me. I'd be more inclined to leave a note than to knock on a stranger's door. Note is less intrusive.

I've gotten a number of notes, or conversations if I am out front and the 4Runner (or Camry) is nearby. Nobody cold-calling (errr... knocking) on the door though.
Doesn't really bother me - mostly it is by people who want to low ball, as far as I can tell.

I've not had anyone come ring my doorbell about my 4Runner, but I would not be upset if they did. In the early 2000's, I bought a '68 Ford F100 shortbed that way, and the guy was happy to let it go. Never do know until you ask sometimes. I see it as a fellow enthusiast trying their luck, so I wouldn't get mad at them.
However, I've had several notes left on mine in parking lots. Come to think of it, they all happened in 2020-2021.

As a "car guy" I see both sides. Shoot your shot, you never know. At the same time, I see the bit of invasion of privacy too.
Personally no one has asked to purchase mine, but in the last year more than ever I have received a lot more compliments on it. Which is cool.

I am a recently retired Commercial Banker and avid surf fisherman. One of my good friends, and competitor, had his 2001 Jeep Cherokee pancaked by a large pine tree. He used it for surf fishing. He tried to find another but did not have any success. He started calling me once a week trying to buy mine....another 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport. My neighbor is a used car dealer and found mine. It was an EPA owned vehicle with only 59,000 miles. I paid $5500 for the vehicle and a $300 fee to him for his service. I drove it daily for 10 years and the mileage was now 159,000 miles. I was tired of his calling and asked my car dealer buddy what I needed to do. He said tell him $5,500 and he will not call you again. Much to my surprise, He called again the following week. I told him $5,500 and he said I will be there in 15 minutes. I was in shock...but a deal was a deal and I signed the title over. Luckily, I still had my 2000 4runner to use for surf fishing.
