The only muffler that will not pass a CA smog test is the one that is not installed. Any and all mufflers on the market currently will pass. If somehow you manage to produce more than 95 dB of sound going 15 MPH and 25 MPH on the rollers, hats off to you my friend. My 3" exhaust isn't even that loud and I set off car alarms all the time doing 25 MPH in my neighborhood.

Shooting flames out the back is cool if you are playing Need for Speed but in real life the unburnt fuel through your catalytic converter will cause premature failure. The part costs over $1500 from Toyota so I don't recommend doing it.

And, in addition, if you live in Cali (or anywhere out west in recent years) this is just irresponsible with respect to wildfires. Even the safety chains on your trailer dragging on the ground creating sparks are under scrutiny.

Please don't.

Sell your 4runner and buy a rice burner. That's my advice.

In my area there are high school kids (and adults believe it or not) that do that pop loud exhaust and it just annoys everyone.

It's a feable attempt at sounding like your have launch control. Even nice BMWs around here do it, and it's obnoxious.

You would do your nice 4runner a disservice, by attempting this in my opinion.

But if you just want a throaty sounding exhaust, I recommend deleting the muffler and replacing it with a quality straight through resonator.

YouTube what that sounds like and I think you will like it. 👍

Spending money for a muffler that makes your car sound like it doesn't have a muffler.
Bless your heart.

Figure out what you need from a Pontiac 6000. One of the best sounding V6's ever.

I tend to agree, maybe I'm just getting older and more practical. A loud exhaust and subwoofers are the least of my priorities. Not saying anything is wrong with them, it's just not for me.

I put on a super 10 for a day, its louder than straight pipe and sounds like a race truck. BEST sound that will ever come out of a 4runner and considering its a "muffler device" it will pass emissions in the state of Arizona so long as you have it past the cat, which shoots down the idea of shooting flames. If you want to shoot flames you could put a pre-cat cutout that bypasses the cat and re-enters into the normal exhaust, however that might make you fail emissions if they look under. State of California I don't think you're getting away with even a super 40 or 44, everything is strict over there. You can't fart in your vehicle without getting a state ref for unregistered emissions.

Cali-bashing is fun, but that's not true at all. All Smog data comes from the ECU for Y2K and up - no sniffer and no visuals at the shops I've visited. Never heard of a decibel test being used either and I have been known to set off car alarms.

so just going for noise or performance? Is it for you to hear or the person next to you at the stop light?

After years of being here on this forum I find it interesting that "some" who do this kind of mod....also post that they put in sound deadening mats into their rig to eliminate outside noise.
For me...I wanted any kind of extra hp and maybe mpg...and supposedly the magnaflow ( and other stuff...which did little) did that and gave me a nice sound...but not so nuts that I needed to put sound mats in my rig or wear ear plugs.
as long as it does not sound like a rice rocket

I had a 68 roadrunner with strait pipes and glass packs and Firestone wouldn’t pass the exhaust sound without the PA State Police doing a sound check.
