aperrucci's '99 Limited 4wd Build

Current:

Mods/Work done:

Suspension/Wheels:

285/75/16 Goodyear Duratrac
KMC Impact OL Matte Bronze 16x8 +0
Trail Gear 1.0" Spacers
Energy Suspension Steering Rack Bushings
New endlinks all around
New Swaybar Bushings
New Inner & Outer Tie Rods
Bilstein 5100 shocks front and rear
OME 881 Front, 890 Rear
SPC Upper Control Arms
Whiteline LCA Bushings
333 Fab Cam Eliminators
Energy Suspension Panhard Bar Bushings
Eimkeith PCK

Picked up my 3rd gen in December 2021. Finding a decent example was way more difficult than I was expecting. Looked at a bunch of trucks all with rust or other issues, even started considering 4th gens though I knew I was pretty set on a 3rd gen.

Luckily came across this '99 Limited 4wd w/ 250k miles a few hours from me. Everything checked out and $5800 later it was mine.

When I first brought it home:

First thing I did was pull the running boards. Next I worked on the worn out suspension. New upper/lower ball joints, tie rods, and some stock struts/springs up front for the time being. After that was 265/75/16 Falken Wildpeak AT3W's.

Got all the work done in about 2 weeks since getting the truck and then I was off to Colorado for the month of January 2022. Put 6k miles on the truck in a month driving from Georgia to Colorado and then Denver to the mountains and back multiple times a week during January.

Got back from CO at the beginning of this month and took the 4Runner on my first wheeling trip. All stock besides tires and the truck did great! Wasn't sure how intense of trails we were getting into but I was definitely impressed at some of the terrain it was able to handle as is. Looking to do a lift and probably front bumper in the near future now.

Most recently just added this roof basket from my buddies truck as he plans on building himself a roof rack.

That brings us up to date, looking forward to doing some mods soon!

Hey fellow Georgian! I'm from Savannah but if you need any help I frequently go by your neck of the woods. Some advice; if you aren't planning on doing hard and often wheeling, be careful about what upgrades you do. I have owned a stock 4runner with 31" all terrains and now I have a more heavily modified truck. My stock one could do 90% of the offroading and the drivability and reliability was way better on the road.

This is what I would do if I could redo it
32" AT tires (Wildpeaks)
2" lift (Bilstein 5100 shocks with OME 881/901 coils fr/rr)
Sleeping/storage platform
Cool rims (SCS F5 16x8 -25mm)
Hidden winch mount (Amp'd up llc makes one for 279)
Only use oem replacement parts

This is just me and I have fallen into the fun but expensive pit of squeezing the most off-road capability out of my rig. It's your choice in the end, but that's what I would do. Good luck!

Awesome, thanks for the advice! Yeah it's always a trade off of cool stuff vs. on road comfort haha.

Went wheeling again. Local trail, super mild but fun.

Started building some rock sliders for the truck today with the help of a friend. Got them mostly assembled and tacked together. Just need to add a couple of supports between the two bars and add legs/mockup fitment. Plan on painting them to match the cladding and then welding them to the frame.

Also trying to order lift soon!

Tore the suspension apart for a much needed overhaul.

Currently installing:

Bilstein 5100's/OME 881, 890
SPC Upper Control Arms
Whiteline Front LCA bushings
Toytec Diff Drop
333 Fab Cam Eliminator Plates
OEM Toyota rear upper control arms

Currently the new rear suspension is in besides the new upper arms. As you can see in the photo one of them snapped when I dropped the axle down to install the rear springs lol. Decided to go with the 333 fab cam eliminators while I was in there messing the front LCA's. Glad I did too as the passenger side cam adjusters were seized to the bushings and I had to cut that arm out. The old bushings were pretty rusted in place as well. Ended up heating them up, pushing the rubber out and had to cut the sleeves out with the air chisel as the 20 ton press wouldn't budge them. New Whiteline bushings are in just waiting on the cam eliminators to show up and I can wrap the front back up. Excited to see how it drives after all this, should be much better!

Any suggestions for an initial camber setting on the SPC uppers for the drive to the alignment shop? Just set it in the middle? Also how are most people running their lower cam eliminators? Seeing some say outboard rear, inboard front, and also outboard rear, front center.

Got it all wrapped up and aligned. Also scored on a trade. Traded my 265's for 285/75/16's. This truck rides a like dream now!

More progress on the sliders! One more Saturday in the shop and they should be on the truck.
