How do you get rid of the chrome on the grille and on the bumpers?

Looking to dechrome her but I don't know-how. I would show a picture but its not working.

I see bedliner as the most commonly used product. If you just strip the chrome off with a powerful paint thinner it'll just looks rusty as it's a metallic coating, not your normal paint. Bedliner is a bit of a mud magnet and can be hard to clean though.

Having plasti-dipped one grille and used bed liner on another, I think they’re pretty comparable when it comes to attracting mud/dirt. I like the Plastidip look because it’s a smooth black finish. Whereas bedliner has a textured finish, which I also equally like. Ultimately you gotta decide which finish you’re looking to go with and pick your poison

Not a P Dip salesman, but Dip works because you can change your mind and peel it off without using solvents needed to remove paint. The other benefit is if you use their Dip Release (the dip won't stick) stuff on areas that may get over-spray, you can forgo a whole bunch of masking. I suppose you could do the job pretty easily with the grille in place. Just be sure to paper/cover everything behind the grill like your AC condenser, horns and whatnot. Plasti-dipping is a bit off a rite of passage and I used the stuff once on my factory alloys. Probably won't bother again.

The problem with painting chrome is nothing wants to stick to chrome forever. It's impossible to scuff without gouging or tearing and once it starts rusting from underneath failure is inevitable

Curious: is your chrome rusting? or do you just dislike the look?

Why not just buy replacement bumpers and paint them black. Then are off your chrome bumpers to someone that wants them. If Oem ones they probably be worth a little. Shipping those are rough though. Its just a thought.
