Since owning mine (early 99) in 2006, the gauge has never read correctly, but have learned to live with it. The strange thing is that with the AC on though, the gauge will then read the amount of fuel correctly. I have always believed that I need the circuit board and to calibrate it to read correctly. Maybe one day when I replace the pump.

Rear driveshaft out for better access to the top of my gas tank when I was checking the hose connections to troubleshoot my p0440 evap code that I got shortly after reinstalling my gas tank. Slip yoke removed for greasing while the driveshaft was out. Broke out my homemade smoke machine in case there wasn't any obvious signs of a faulty hose connection.

Evap hose on top of the tank that wasn't fully seated that I was thankfully able to quickly find on visual/physical inspection. No need to smoke out the leak this time. Back into retirement my smoke machine goes.

The first thing I thought when starting to read this was, "neat, gotta try this."

Then my focus shifted and others noted it as well: Holy crap your undercarriage is clean!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks so much for posting this. After washing my 4Runner the other day, the fuel gauge dropped to empty and the gas light came on despite having 1/2 a tank left. After finding your post, I looked up my 4Runner's VIN on the TSB and it was listed as needing a new fuel sending unit (which maybe explains why I was always only adding 12-13 gallons when filling up at the gas station). Before spending the money on parts though, I tried the free solutions and, while adding a new ground did nothing, the recalibration procedure you listed did the trick! Time will tell if the fix is permanent but 🤞
