J shifter won’t shift out of 4wd, what should I check?

When I shift from 4wd to 2wd it wont shift all the way, feels like it’s hitting something before it can shift all the way out. If I hit a bump it will shift out. Sometimes I have to drive in a left hand circle to get it to pop back into 2wd. What should I start checking?

Sounds like your binding from driving in 4wd without the roads bring wet, snow covered or in mud.

I agree. I bind in 4lo sometimes due to various conditions and have a hard time shifting back to 4hi...

So just a road test will cause these issues? I had trouble in sand at the beach too if that makes any difference.

The J shifter is a manual 4wd connection. It doesn't slip and can very easily bind up. So if you are not on conditions that will let wheel slip to release the binding it will bind up causing exactly what you are describing.

What exactly are you doing?

Going from 2 h to 4 hi will mostly go
right in.

Stop completely to go into 4lo. If there is any binding they do not want come out of 4 hi or 4 lo.

You can back up. To try to release the binding.
