Power Steering Pump - Replacement Recommedations

My son’s ‘98 has a really whiny pump after a few hours of driving. Last year I cleaned the reservoir and flushed the system. If it needs a new pump - my guess is yes - what brand is a good one to purchase?

Guessing system is Full?

I'd give it another flush before replacing pump.

Mine took 3 successive years of flushes to stop the whine in first start cold weather conditions. Been fine for years now, just had to get the caked on gunk from years of someone else's neglect.

Check your high pressure lines and everything before replacing the pump. I swore I needed a new pump when I had the horrible PSP whine a couple months ago which ended up being a clogged up reservoir filter. I rebuilt the pump with new seals (Gates kit) while I was at it. Aftermarket pumps don't work like the original Toyota part.

I defiantly agree with FD7683 on this one along with others. Always best to keep that screen filter clean. IF in the rust belt. Also verify the lines are not really rusty. As I replaced a pump. Then my high pressure line failed by rusting through thus taking out another pump. So I just wanted to add this information to the thread. :-)

Don’t be like me and replace your PS pump because your idler pulley bearing is whining like a PS pump. You’re probably not a dumbass like me and checked that first though
