JoeT4R’s 2001 SR5 Build & Maintenance Thread

Date of purchase: February 2nd, 2013
Mileage: 191,586 mi.
Price: $4816
Location: VA Beach

Completely stock, no modifications, 2001 SR5 4WD. I’m going to begin logging everything from date of purchase to present and it may take a while. I will use this thread to keep up with maintenance and to have an online record of everything that has been done to my rig. I have just about every maintenance receipt from the very first oil change until now, with the exception of about a 1.5-2 year lapse in between. All maintenance records prior to my ownership were given to me by the previous owner. This should be fun. Here’s a photo taken shortly after purchase and brought home to my parents house.

I want to welcome ANY and ALL questions regarding my build. I hope that this build thread will serve as a platform to interact with people who need information, or who just want to have conversations about their rigs. I will drop a photo below of how it sits as of May 2022.

Hey Joe- really clean build you have there. Glad you didn't scrap her after being totaled. Hope to see her get to 600k!

Thanks dude, I’m glad I didn’t get rid of it either. It’s been good to me and I’ve been good to it. Certainly plan to keep it for as long as possible, too.

After 313K miles, I finally realized that my third brake light was out. I saw my reflection in a glass window and noticed it. Who knows how long it was really out for. But I went ahead and purchased some new LED bulbs to install and here are the final results. I'm happy with it.

Thanks. I wanted them for a long time and decided to pull the trigger on them shortly after Christmas last year and glad that I finally did. They were very easy to install, even in very cold temperatures. Definitely a nice touch for the back of the truck.

@brillo_76 Ah man, thank you for the kind words sir. I’m honored to have you comment on my build thread. Everything I’ve ever read that you’ve posted is always something I either agree with, is really intelligent, or just overall beneficial to the conversation at hand. So I appreciate it. (Not being facetious either)

I’m also glad I didn’t get rid of it when it was totaled. It was a sad, sad day. I was asleep and around 10:45 pm, one of my neighbors ran down to my house and banged on my window to wake me up. Ran outside in boxers and pistol in hand thinking something was going down. It was definitely not a good night when that happened. But I’m really thankful for the money I received and the fact that I had the ability to get it fixed. Big shoutout to my Mom as well, who allowed me to share her car with her during that time.

I just been working on Toyotas since I was around 13 or 14. Saw lots of changes over the years. I just a hobby mechanic though. So don't give me too much credit.
I actually saved all my fleet of 3rd gens from the junk yard except one. And it's frame had a major bad section too. They are my hobby. Rebuilding the frames and chassis.

I am really glad to see the younger folks getting into the fixing and repairing. As these skills come in handy and will save you a pile of money in your lifetime.

After a long time of wanting them, I finally decided to order the Depo clear turn signal housings. $34 and some change out the door on eBay. Installed them last night. The original red clips that Toyota had installed on my OEM turn signals were honestly tough to get off from the bumper. My thumb bled a little bit trying to get those dang things off. The new Depo housings came with new clips so it was a straight plug-and-play scenario.
