Maglite mounts in 2022

All right guys, I want to see your maglite Mount setups to give me some ideas. I've got a D4 and a C3 (the big minimal thrower) that I'd like to mount but I'm really just not sure where and how...

Curious to see if you guys have any innovative ideas

Whew, I remember those monsters... glad to have moved on from them. But look to fire extinguisher mounting ideas as you're dealing with similar length and weight. My fire extinguisher is mounted between the 2 front seat mount bolts on the passenger side, no new holes and not really space that's otherwise used.

Any reason you're sticking with those?

I may be missing something.... but why the hell would you need to "mount" a flashlight anywhere? I can't think of a single reason that would ever be needed

Might be a good application for the console molle panels.
I had a 5D in my pickup. Drivers side, vertical, directly below the A-pillar. That pickup is a lot roomier than the 4runner. But that's where it was.

I have a 5th gen, but it replaced an ‘02 Tacoma TRD so it applies to your situation.

In that truck I did a number of cheap, amateurish minor mods (scanner, CB radio videocamera mounts). In those days I used what I had on hand in my workshop and when the idea hit me, the nearest hardware store was 20 miles away.

I mounted my D cell maglight to the floor to the left of the driver seat. I used a conduit clamp screwed into the plastic door sill trim, leaving the other side unattached. It was tight enough that it didn’t move around and allowed easy access even while driving. Simply slid the flashlight forward and out. The flashlight always stayed put underway even on the worst, rocky downhill trails.

It’s something that only someone over a certain age and who uses their T4R off road a high percentage of its use would understand.

You might be onto something. I'm old enough to remember the righteous uproar over clubbing baby seals and have always thought of my big 5 D Cell Maglites more as clubs/weapons. With modern powerful compact LED technology there is really no need for something that big - but it is a nice feeling to have one nearby. In this Mad Max world I can't leave anything in the rig anyway and when I'm out camping I have other defense options.

On the sub box. I have that neebo as well, i like it but love the old heavy lights. Simple on/off, I don’t have to click through bunch of settings and stupid stobes just to turn it off. Simple and tough just like the old 4runner.

No need for those old mega-lites. Check out a Fenix PD36R. 1600 lumens that will fit in your front pocket. It's my EDC and my backup.

With a few simple nearly free mods, the issues with the donut can pretty much be completely resolved.

Next thing being that there is no such thing as an American made LED flashlight. The flashlight body itself can be, but as far as I'm aware not a single manufacturer in the US produces LEDs.

Science alert.

Honestly at this point I've practically given up on LEDs at a technology. Realistically they are inferior to incandescent lighting in every way except for energy efficiency. But see that's the problem, they're not just better, you're trading off light quality purely for energy efficiency. This problem is similar to the whole problem with audio quality right now. Most people don't even have a clue how much they're being ripped off nowadays. I've met so many people that have problems sleeping and when I ask them it basically turns out that they've got daylight bulbs everywhere in the house and use them up until bedtime. No no no.

You don't need 6500k lights. That's just completely impractical and bad for your health honestly. And because just about every LED bulb is extremely cheap and poor quality, the color rendering is horrible. I've spent several hundred dollars converting just about everything in my house over to 95+ cri quality led bulbs. Mostly 2700k to 3000k. I even have 1700k bulbs for late at night use. The difference in light quality is just astounding and once you see the difference you really don't want to go back.

People don't think about this kind of stuff but it really does make a big difference. Once it hits about 6:00 I switch over from 4,000 k to 2700k. This makes it significantly easier to become sleepy as your brain knows that "daylight is day time". Where's when it becomes late it becomes more and more warm in terms of light temperature.

I've spent dozens of hours looking but there does not seem to exist a 3000k (or close to it) 90+ CRI led that is user replaceable.

Not to mention that most LED lights now days are extremely lacking in the thermal control department. It doesn't really matter to incandescent since it's going to be hot no matter what and that's what it's designed to do.

Science alert over.

So anyway, for me to practically incandescent flashlights just make more sense, are infinitely repairable, and are more practical in terms of late night use and preserving night vision.

So it's easy to grab and also isn't flying around all over the truck and turns and stuff like that? Just seems like a good idea I thought.

I mean let's be real, 1600 lumens is just way too much. And I can almost promise you that it's probably something like 6,000k and probably has an extremely poor CRI. So not only is it going to ruin your night vision, it's just straight up blinding and harsh. Plus I can't imagine something that powerful lasting for a very long time.

Realistically, for nighttime use, 50 to 200 lumens is more than sufficient. Especially when the light is around 2700-3000k.

All of my modded (C/D cell) mag lites can run for 30 hours or more based on testing. More than enough, and since I can replace the bulb if I ever need to, they effectively have an infinite lifespan

Anyway, let's get back to mounting talks!

I mount my T6 LED flashlight (18650 battery, 1200 lumens, $5-10) in the
glovebox. For my uses, it's fine. I typically only need it for a few minutes at a
time, and it's ruined my patience or tolerance for seriously underpowered
AAA battery flashlights.

Here it is.

It couldn’t slide forward because of the rise in the floor to support the front of the seat. It couldn’t slide backward because the lens housing was too big to fit through the conduit. The conduit was large enough to allow me to pick it up slightly and bring it forward over the hump. The flashlight is still in the truck, my son has owned the truck since I got my ‘18 T4R.

100 percent. I went to the Toyota Jamboree, and we ALWAYS do Night runs.

I had about 10 flashlights with me. Headlights, handheld lights, spotlights. Each door had a headlight in the door pocket, as well as a small flashlight in the back of each seat.

It was so nice to have a passenger and just be like "grab the headlight" before they got out during a night run. We love to get out and check out the trails at night, and having a headlight is crucial I think.

A spotlight comes in handy in case you have to work on the truck. You can shine it in the general area, but away from the you work area and it will flood with light. It was fantastic when we had to do a little winching at night!

Overall, I keep 3-5 flashlights in my truck at all times. You just never know!
