ABS Light

Hello-

4R has been great, but one day ABS light went on, along with Speedometer not working and E-brake light on. Checked fluid, is good.

Took to my very honest and reasonable mechanic, and he could not get codes off of it. He replaced the speed sensor to no avail.

He believes it is the ABS Pump, and maybe even the ECU. He is looking at options as not to spend $2k on a new pump. Any thoughts or opinions on this?

This is my son's first car, and so far it has been great! we just replaced all the suspension.

The ABS codes have to be flashed. They cannot be read through the OBD2 port. A quick search pulled up this procedure: https://www.toyota-4runner.org/230426-post9.html

Don't replace the pump until you check the inputs. It's probably a free fix. Did he check the abs speed sensor harness. They have a tendency to break if you don't pay attention and let it hang working the suspension.

Skid computer

We had our speedometer go out and ABS light also, it was the "Skid computer" which is located on the left of the driver's footwell, like to the left of the brake pedal, and up a bit. We ordered a used one off ebay, and it resolved the problem.

Fixed!

I know this is an old thread, but thought I would provide the resolution for all! I ended up buying a used ABS Controller on ebay for $220 and the mechanic installed and programmed it, and all is good again! Speedometer working, and all check lights off.

Ended up the ABS controller was not the original, and I guess went dead.

There were cheaper ones on ebay, but this one had a 90 day warranty and his feedback was very positive, and he sells a lot of controllers. So i thought it was worth the extra $$$.
